Ebay Pet Peeve - 01-16-2007, 02:02 PM

Well this has always been something that has bothered me. I could just be picky but its just driving me nuts. How many people have bought something off of Ebay and the seller will not leave feedback untill you the buyer has left feedback. The only reason I bring this up is that I actually got an email from a seller asking me to leave feedback. I beleive that if I'm the seller and the buyer has paid in a quick manor and all communication has been done, and I have shipped the item then I should leave leave positive feedback. I don't beleive that I being the seller should wait for the buyer to leave feedback in order to decide what my feedback should be. I could be wrong. Please let me know how you feel about the situation.

Thanks,
Bert

Bert, my wife deals on ebay a lot, has been since 1999. She always waits for the buyer to leave feedback first. The reason being is that if there is any type of problem, she wants the buyer to contact her first before any type of exchanges of feedback are given. That way, all parties are on the same page and everthing is cool.

If a buyer never leaves feedback, she does not leave feedback for them as well. This is to protect herself from the nuts (and there are a few on ebay) that will leave malicious feedback just for the hell of it or over the slightest complaint. People do weird things on ebay sometimes.

That way, if the buyer leaves positive feedback, she knows everything went fine on the deal, and then she leaves positive feedback for them as well. The main thing she wants to do is make sure the buyer is happy. In over 700 deals on ebay, she has one negative feedback and that was from a deadbeat bidder who left retaliatory feedback because my wife left negative feedback for non-payment.

Sadly, the feedback system on ebay is far from perfect and you have whackos out there that abuse the system all the time. Hope this helps.

I agree with Rick, another reason is that until the buyer leaves their feedback you don't know for sure that they received the item what with the shippers leaving things without signatures and such.

There are no easy solutions when it comes to Ebay feedback. Sellers do this because so often they will ship fast and do everything expected of them and if they leave feedback first then the buyer has what they want, ie the product and positive feedback, and never give the seller a kind feedback in return. The bad part of the buyer leaving feedback first is if the buyer gives good communication and fast payment and the seller takes their time and gets poor feedback then they may not give poor feedback in return or no feedback when the buyer deserves positive.

I wish though that they had seperate ratings for buyers and sellers. A person buying and hitting the pay now button doesn't prove that they are a trustworthy seller.

And while we are on Ebay pet peeves... Mine is trying to look for items like Muslin backgrounds in the Muslin backgrounds category and having to wade through all the listings that don't belong there like chroma key CDs, background supports and canvas backgrounds.

This is a loaded topic...but here's my situation (Im assuming its not the same as yours):

I've been selling info on eBay for a few years. I no longer leave feedback right after the person pays mainly due to dishonest people that purchase for the purpose of leaving negative feedback (unethical competitors selling a similar product crate accounts that are used as feedback assisns). That sounds funny right? But 1 neg feedback costs me a few hundred buck minimum - they could have written I LOVE BUNNIES next to the red mark. It doesnt matter. Red = bad person. So far, I have only gotten negs from competitors & 1 nut over a bridesmaid dress. So thats my personal reason.

I doubt that is your situation - but I've been burned enough times that I no longer automatically leave feedback. I mention it at checkout and don't bother people past that about it.

Ebay has become a slimy place for buyers and sellers. It used to be nice and a good spot to buy a bargain. Now I have to weed to find good stuff to buy and Im paranoid of thieves lurking in there.

I bought a bridesmaid gown (new - exactly what I needed) and the girl never shipped the dress. I paid for insurance and tracking #. She didnt have either. She went nuts when I requested that she file the insurance claim so I could get my money back and buy another dress. She topped it off with leaving me negative feedback.

Remember - not everyone sucks - just about everyone does.

Ebay has been a pet peeve here too. I feel for ya.

I guess the part that really bothered me the most was the the fact that I held up my end of the bargain and no feedback was left then I receive an email from the person for me to leave them feedback. I always make it a point to email when the item is recieved. If the item is not what I ordered or not up to par and I leave negative feedback that doesn't give them the right to leave neagative feedback for me because I have upheld my end. Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks,
Bert

I agree it should work the way you'd think, but not everyone is so honest. And eBay has had issues with feedback so that they wont touch it...the only way to remove a statement is via a judge (after you exhaust eBays useless help).

I bailed out of eBay for about a year b/c it was just too much - people using feedback like you said - basically to exhort what they want. A redo of the feedback system would be a good thing at this point...

When I sell and the buyer pays, I leave feedback immediately. Most sellers do not, but I understand their situation and can live with it. What chaps me is buyers and sellers who don't leave feedback for weeks or months, if at all. I will send a couple of emails, spaced a week or so apart if I don't get feedback, then I assume they are just cretins, and make a mental note not to deal with them.

My previous auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=330065449909

and I write: Last, I do not leave feedback until the buyer leaves feedback. Why do you ask? Something called fraud/extortion/blackmail come to mind and I am sick of dealing with it.
