I have no idea what the assemblywoman's views are on abortion, other than that she is a Democrat from San Francisco. The only reason I can see for bringing it up here is to make sure that Abel closes the thread ;)

I guess out of the billions of people who ever lived on this planet and received a spanking, I am the only one for which it was an effective disciplinary tool that didn't scar me for life. Based on this new information, I now agree spankings should be banned.

I actually think a few of you are putting too much weight on discpline affecting the current crime rate in our society. One reason the crime rate seems especially high is pretty obvious... the population is higher. Also we're living a world where people thrive on bad news, so you're much more likely to hear about all the terrible things that happen. Communication is much easier than it was >100 years ago. I've actually known quite a few "bad" people and I can say with certainty that there were both "bad" people that got their whoopings and "bad" people that didn't receive any discipline whatsoever.

I wish I could find this study I read about violence - it was very interesting. They grouped up rats within two identical confined areas with all of the essentials for a comfortable life. In one pen they put something like twice as many rats though. Over time the rats in the over-populated confine because increasingly violent for no obvious reason. They started killing eachother, stealing food from one another, ganging up on eachother. It was a bit startling to see how just the issue of population has such a negative impact on a creature's behavior - and that this small experiment mirrors city life in the modern world.

So yeah... that's a pretty big tangent right there, haha... I thought it was interesting though :D

%'s are %'s no matter the population size and certain parts of the country have higher crime RATES than others and it isn't dependent on population density. In fact most of the areas with the high crime rates in the article above are single family homes or small apartment complexes and not the huge "Projects" such as the ones in Chicago and NY City/Harlem that were known crime cooking pots.

As to gangs the idea or theory of gangs goes back to ancient man and they used to be called warriors because they protected your village and attacked the enemy village/country etc. If you go back to Alexander the Great's time period most of the age group that is the biggest gang problem now is what was in his army back then. THE army back then wasn't full of late 20's early 30's aged men but of teenagers who were the fodder of battle who if they survived then became the commanders of the new entrants on their next war but back then many people were dead before 40 from desease or battle.

AS TO the RAT study the rats perceived that they were in danger of loosing their food source or not getting their full share along with more competition for the females so the stronger would kill off the weak though there was no actual shortage of food (not sure about how receptive the females were and how the population was split sexwise).

A lot has to do with perceptions than reality.

A lot of people think that the Wild Wild West was far more dangerious than it was in reality and you were more likely to die of desease/animal or reptile attack than from the hand of another man than you are now, that is yes there were a few natorious killers who have come down through history but there are bigger murders now that are walking the streets.

So a THREE YEAR old can keep an airplane basically held hostage? So what is wrong with this picture? I guess if the law changed and the flight is in California they would ply the kid with candy and pop?

What's wrong with the picture is that it is news at all. The kid wouldn't get in her seat, they threw them off the plane, and gave them a refund. What are you objecting to? I'm missing something here.

In California, if the law passed, the same thing could have happenned. No spanking was involved. Again, what is the problem you see here?

i think everyone has had their chance to voice their opinions on the subject...

everyone has their own views/opinions and neither side will be able to sway the other...

with that in mind the thread will be closed...
