first of all, what happened to parental authority? second, she doesn't have any children so what would she know anyway? as far as discipline for children under 4, I only used spanking (which was really only a couple of swats on their bottom) when I felt is necessary as a parent, which I thought was my job.....

I never got a spanking I didn't deserve. But I did get quite a few of them. But I remember thinking I would rather have a butt whipping than one of those talks my Daddy would give me,telling me how disappointed he was in my behavior. at least when the sting was over ,it was over. With the talks I had to think about what I was doing.
I was not one to spank my kids very often ,but a swat on the butt on occasion to get their attention is sometimes callled for .
As far as the law goes ,it is just another instance of someone trying to legislate their values on everyone else and I think that is wrong. Bob

To be honest have you tried to reason with a TWO YEAR OLD? It don't work! You have to show authority at times as a parent and one way to get to the seat of the problem is through the seat! Now I am not into the whailing on the kid like some people but believe more that a good swat or two will really get their attention and prove the point after some verbal actions have been gone through and they know that they have crossed the line so I think this lady should be put in a room with 50 two year olds for 3 days straight and see what she thinks then!

It's a whole lot different to give a couple of swats on the bottom to a two-year-old who's wearing a diaper than to "whip a 1-year-old or a 6-month-old or a newborn!"
I agree there are other, and probably better, ways to discipline and sadly there are are parents who do take 'spanking' to excess, but who's going to define that?

Not to worry... Cali is going to just slip off into the ocean soon anyway.
I have two daughters, and while I don't believe in 'beating' them in the same manner as I was while growing up... a 'brain duster' has been required from time to time. Maybe I'm lucky, but I don't find that I need to discipline my girls very often at all. But I believe that comes from a combination of love and respect. I honestly cannot remember the last time I had to deliver a 'thump' :)
I think this quote from Ah'nold is pretty funny... Quote:
The governor said he and his wife, Maria Shriver, did not spank their four children and used alternative methods for discipline. For example, Schwarzenegger said they found it more effective to threaten to take away their children's play time if they didn't do school work.
"They hate that much more than getting spanked," he told reporters Friday in Los Angeles.
| Do you see that? 'we don't spank' .... but they hate having their playtime taken away more than 'spanking'. How do you know...?

I'm thinking people who start political threads could be spanked. :)

My parents used the worst kind of psychological warfare known to man on me.....
They let me know that they were dissappointed in my decision-making. Knowing that I had let my parents down was harsh.
Then...the punishment for the bad decision was usually a spanking....but after I got to go to my room for a few minutes to "think" about it.

Well... it's time to get back in the game.

Most of the memories that people are bringing up, and even ARNOLDS comment, are all from when you were probably 4 or older but this lady is leaning on 2 and 3 year olds (really no reason to punish a kid under 2 because they have no real reasoning of actions and consequences other than to say keep them safe from picking up stray items and putting them in their mouths etc).
To be honest I bet very very few people have any memories from when they were 2 or 3 unless it was something extremely traumatic for them, heck ask a 6 year old about something when they were 2 and they probably couldn't give you much details say even of their birthday that year. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
