calling all experts...

here's my system..

i have c drive - ide - connected to mb..
i have additional drive - connected to mb

1 sata drive - connected to mb..

raid card - controls up to 4 ide -
1 ide +
1 ide in a removeable drawer system

now - i bought a new drive yesterday, 400gb seagate to replace the drawer drive.

when i put things on this drive - when plugged into the ide - it corrupts everything. if i plug it in to usb - it appears to work stellar.

my question is - it has to be the raid array thing not defined, right? this disk has not been defined ?

thanks for any replies...

janetg

Define 'corrupts everything'. In my world that means that the data on the drives get hosed.
If you just mean that the drives stop working then it is probably a jumper issue. Drives can be set as 'single disk', 'slave', 'master', or 'cable detect'. If you have two disks hooked to the same cable, make sure the primary is set to 'master' and the secondary is set to 'slave'. Most disks come set as 'single disk' or 'master'.

hi bartman - thanks for replying... and yes i know that defining a raid anything destroys what is there - there's nothing on it though - just a few files that i "copied" over. (learned that lesson the hard way as well - always copy - not move...then if everything is fine - delete.

but the drive is on a raid controller...so therefore doesn't it have to be defined as something?

Depends. If the 'RAID' controller isn't a true hardware RAID device (MB controllers and most cheap 3rd party cards are not), then no. They operate as a standard controller unless you define a RAD.

If it is a true hardware RAID card then I don't know since I have never used one.

Sounds like you need to enter the Raid controller bios during bootup and tell the system how you intend to use the drive. After that, right click on my computer, select manage, then drive management. If you see the drive, format it under drive management and it should be usable. You may have to mark the partition as active before you can format and use the drive.
