Ellis County - 01-24-2007, 09:48 AM

Anybody know anything about Ellis County? We're going to look at some land tomorrow in Maypearl...possibly to build a house on in time for next school year. Just thought I'd cast a line out there and see if I get any bites from anybody that is from there, been there etc.....And as always..Thanks to my TPF family for your input (or not)....

We have a good friend who just started teaching Maypearl ISD. She loves it, the admin and parents are very supportive.

We have some family who used to live there, they had retired to Maypearl back in the 80s (they are no longer there).

The Super Collider had generated a lot of land grabs back a few years ago, that seems to have subsided altho rumors persist of a resurrection of sorts (highly doubtful). More than a few got burned in speculation of quick riches. Most of that should be history, but be aware that some may still be trying to cash in.

Hey, I grew up in Waxahachie. But it's been about 10 years since I've been back.

It is nice down there and a nice launching point to the hill country.
As a bonus it should erase your memories of Mesquite.
The courthouse in Waxahachie is worth the trip.

Don't overlook Venus, a bit north and to the west but right on 67.

Not many earthlings can also be Venutians at the same time. Used to have a great old town center until a big fire about 10 years ago burned a lot of it up, have not been back through there since the fire so not sure what shape it is in.

Have never heard much negative about Maypearl, just a small town feal. Yeah the supercolider really got the land market down there hot but that has pretty much settled down. Find out if you are buying any acreage where the land is in relation to the colliders original path (bet the county courthouse has all sorts of maps about the locations and paths).

Thanks for the input y'all. Actually I'm only talking about 2 acres. I guess when somebody says "Land" it sounds like a ranch. Nope, just somewhere to get away from the hoodlums moving into Mesquite. Ya know...I work in gangster/hoodlum areas in Dallas. They have migrated across LBJ eastward and are now infiltrating my nice little neighborhood. When I get off work I don't particularly care to see them on my street and in my daughters school. The land is something my step-son owns and he's also a builder so it could really work out for us. Oh how I'd love to go from my 1324 sq ft home to a 2600 sq ft home........Oh, did I mention the 4-car garage??? I see a studio somewhere in there..

Venus' town square is in rough shape.. they never rebuilt any of the stuff destroyed by fire... Venus has the advantage of being located right at FM 157 and highway 67, making both Mansfield and Cedar Hill short drives.

Maypearl is farther south on FM 157.. and has a very small town center (thing old main street more than a square) if you hang a right instead of a left where FM 157 ends. I don't remember the name (number) of the road where 157 ends at Maypearl, but it is the same road that Scarborough Faire is on and it intersects with I35E.

(For those of you who are wondering why FM 157 sounds familiar, its Cooper and/or Collins Street in Arlington - depending where you are in Arlington and Industrial in East Fort Worth/HEB.)

If you have kids, check out the schools. Go to the State school web site, see what % take the SAt, and the percentage that passes, that can mean a lot. Forget TASS scores, thats a bunch of sh**. I have 4 boys and went thru this a few years back. Nice little town, friendly people, east Texas, 90 miles from DFW airport, and an Excemplary RAting from the state, Only 1 senior got above state mean on the SAT and the others were below. But they had GREAT TASS scores. We moved to Glen Rose because of the school.
