Ok, so I'm the proud new owner of a "Thrifty fifty" thanks to HT (and to Brad for bringing it to my attention). I pick it up at the post office this morning in time for my daughters 2pm basketball game. I know it's small in stature, not near as impressive as a couple other lenses I have, but I'm psyched nonetheless.
Hey...it's an f 1.8 for cryin out loud! As I pull in the parking lot I see a guy infront of me pull out this big honker of a lens. Ok..to begin with it was white .....
CHA CHING!!!!!! Ok..I'm screwed. Then I saw that it had a face about the size of a pie plate!! Well, you know they say size matters! I was knocked right off my cloud. As it turned out he was only there to take a few pics of one child....Thank the Lord! I was already prepared to be a pain in his rear by constantly using my flash while being positioned directly across from him!!

So, what lens would you say it was and how much would that baby cost?

My guess is an f2.8 whatever mm lens. You will be doing just fine with an f1.8.

There are "white" lenses in the moderate price range, all the way up to waaaaaay expensive. Most are f/2.8 (not not all). All the L lenses that are white are all higher in quality build, glass, and in focusing speed than the 50mm 1.8, but that little lens is still great and worth every penny of it's low price (I have one, love it). To know the cost of the white lens, you'd have to ask what it was...such as, the 70-200 f/4 is like $660. The 70-200 f2.8 is around $1100 without IS, and like $1700 with IS. Then, there are also several prime lenses that are white, although I'd guess he was shooting one of the three I just listed.

I also know a lot of people like to shoot with the other "faster than 2.8 lenses" that Canon sells. There are a few others that are 1.8 or 2.0 that work well for poorly lit gym lighting when 2.8 just won't cut it.
