Here's a few I've used in forum signatures before.

Flying is simple. You just throw yourself at the ground and miss.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at boxing

A few of a serious nature - 02-01-2007, 04:14 PM

"When values are sufficient,
Laws are unnecessary.
When values are insufficient,
Laws are unenforceable."

These from Edmund Burke:
"Among a people generally corrupt, liberty cannot long exist."

No one made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke

and finally,

"There is hardly a product of our culture that someone cannot make a little worse and sell for a little less, and the one who puts price above all other considerations is the natural prey of this man." (pp)

The first time I came across this quote, I was in High School, and it really made an impact on me. To this day,it's something that comes to mind if I'm in a situation where I question my courage to stand up for someone or something I believe in.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
-Lazarus Long, Time Enough For Love

An armed society is a polite society.
-Beyond This Horizon

Being intelligent is not a felony. But most societies evaluate it as at least a misdemeanor.
-Lazarus Long, Time Enough For Love

There is no such thing as luck. There is only adequate or inadequate preparation to cope with a statistical universe.
Robert Heinlein, Time Enough for Love

There are, in every age, new errors to be rectified and new prejudices to be opposed.
Samuel Johnson

All good books have one thing in common - they are truer than if they had really happened.
Ernest Hemingway

Courage is grace under pressure.
Ernest Hemingway

There is no friend as loyal as a book.
Ernest Hemingway

“Take the glamour out of the war?! I mean, how the bloody hell can you do that? Go and take the glamour out of a Huey, go take the glamour out of a Sheridan … Can you take the glamour out of a Cobra or getting stoned on China Beach? … Oh war is good for you, you can’t take the glamour out of that. It’s like trying to take the glamour out of sex, trying to take the glamour out of The Rolling Stones … I mean, you know that, it just can’t be done.”
Tim Page

I sadly smiling remember that the flower fades to make fruit, the fruit rots
to make earth.

Not near as touching or deep as the others on here, but hey a little levity is good once in a while!

If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for mercy, then yes, Mr. Brave man, I guess I'm a coward.

I think the mistake a lot of us make is thinking the state-appointed shrink is our friend.
Sling Blade -- I liked the movie, and this was one of my favorite parts

Karl: [on the phone] Yes, ma'am. I've killed Doyle Hargraves with a lawnmower blade. Yes, ma'am, I'm right sure of it. I hit him two good whacks in the head with it. That second one just plum near cut his head in two... It's a lil' ol' white house on the corner of Vine Street and some other street. There's a pick-up truck out front that says "Doyle Hargraves Construction" on it. Doyle said besides sending the police, you might wanna send an ambulance or a "hearst". I'll be sitting here, waiting on ye.

No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit.
