Interesting Pavolvian reaction in class today. - 02-01-2007, 07:54 PM

I am in class for two days in a training seminar taught by the Shaken Baby Alliance. Good class, but they showed a video taken on a nanny cam that showed the boyfriend come into the baby's room, slap the baby so hard it hit the opposite end of the crib, grab the baby by the throat and jerk it out of the crib. Then you see his arm as he throws this nine month old into the crib as hard as he can. At that point, you found out the cops in the class, because every single one of us came up out of our seats, and reach for our cuffs in an almost Pavlovian response. It was one of the hardest power point videos I have ever had to watch, and after class today of seeing literally eight hours of abused, dead, burned and otherwise battered children, I am mentally exhausted. They told us that a judge gave this scumbag five years deferred, and a $1,000 fine for what he did. It DID occur in Texas up near Dallas-Fort Worth. I came home and just held my kids.

Murph:

I feel for you. I'm glad I don't have to sit through something like that.

A few years ago I had to work an abuse case. Poor little guy (about 4-yo) had scars ontop of scars. I didn't fare well over that one. First time my kids (late teens at the time) ever saw me take more than one drink let alone almost a full fifth of rye - straight. If I had been given the chance I probably would have gladly taken a switch to mom and dad.

I just cannot understand how someone could hurt little kids like we see reported in the news and through support groups. I don't know how to stop people from doing things like that though I sometimes think a sentence of horse-whipping might be a start.

What is a "Pavlovian reaction"? The phrase doesn't ring a bell.

If I recall correctly it is a trained response to a stimuli. The stimuli in this instance was a criminal offense taking place. Police see such an occurance and react as they have been trained... to make an arrest and protect the child.

Hey Duffy, what happens when someone pops open a beer or opens the cover on the grill full of steaks?

I worked child abuse (by strangers, not family) for a couple of years. It is tough to get over.

Murph, check this article out.http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/health/4516317.html

This was always a concern of mine. There are very few studies of what normal injuries are in infants and toddlers. How many kids have had fractures that went unnoticed and healed? In such cases there was no abuse but the old fractures are later attributed to abuse during an investigation.

And don't get me started on CPS.
