Geocachers? - 02-03-2007, 07:24 PM

Anyone do geocaching?

One of my favorite things to do is to just go out and explore and take pictures.
For xmas I got a GPS (actually an auto model but is hand usable, just not ideal for walking route mapping and way pointing).

So I started looking into geocaching as a new thing to do along with my photo-explorations.

Today I got my first cache - way out in the woods at Stephen F Austin State Park (and I got real muddy boots to prove it!). ( cache info: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache...2-b16a111ca8e4 )

Tomorrow I may go to Brazos Bend SP and get some of the caches there.

So anyone else doing this with their photo endeavors?

I gave it a try a few years back. The GPS I had sucked and would loose signal under tree cover. I want to give it a shot again soon.

We used to spend a lot of time geocaching but haven't done any in a couple of years. I'd love to get back into it, but my kids got real tired of it after a while.

I was an active cacher for a couple of years when it started, but then life got too busy with other things. I did love finding lots of little unknown parks and other places around town. I still 'maintain' one virtual cache at the Chicago airport.

After the wedding this year I hope to get back into it a bit when I have the time.

As soon as I get out and get my GPS unit, my family and I are going to do it. Like other's have said it will get us out of the house and give me photo opps. In my city there are over 100 caches. I am looking forward to starting.

Great to see that others are doing it also!

Seems that even some cell phones that are GPS enabled even have Waypointing software available for them now, so people can start doing GC with their cells (don't know how good the quality/accuracy is though).

I was thinking it would be neat to set up a few caches for Photogs only. Part of the logging would be you had to take a picture of the spot.

That would be a cool idea.

You'll have a hard time getting this published if you make it only for Photogs (as it won't meet guidlelines). unless you go to waymarking and set it up as a virtual but not to many people use that part of the site.

The best way to set this one up is as a regular cache then offer an extra smiley for those who take a photo of the site or just ask for indivduals to post photos with no extra smiley.

Another things some do is put a instant camera in the container and ask people to take a photo. then you develop it later and then post the photos.

Only thing with putting a camera in is hoping some wacko doesn't find it and take pictures of other parts of his/her body.

It's a very common practice around here and have yet to hear of any issues.

Here's another site besides Geocaching.com that has lists/maps of caches:
http://www.terracaching.com/
I actually like it more, as it is friendlier and has a point system. Not as many caches in the Houston area though.

I plan on camping in Brazos Bend this weekend and hitting a few of the caches down there.
