Grand Canyon Skywalk - 02-09-2007, 05:27 PM

Will you be brave enough to walk on this? I guess I would not know for sure until I got there and looked at. Right now I would have to say NO.

I've seen some other posts on the topic.

First off, the actual structure is a lot deeper than that shot shows, and more substantial looking. That is an architectural drawing that was done before the structural engineers got involved.

Secondly, there have been impending reports of when this would open and it keeps getting moved back, so be careful what you read and where.

Thirdly, the operators don't seem to be that upfront about it all. For example, evidently there's a charge to go out on it, but first you have to pay a good steep charge to get TO it (IE, to visit the area). And I've read posts by people who visited after getting the impression it was already there when it isn't.

Their website currently shows March 28 as the opening date, with the Visitor Center to open some time after that- I would try to confirm it was actually open before flying out there, though. The pictures on the website showing progress of construction are the same ones that have been up a couple of months.

I'm scared of heights, so that would be a firm "NO" for me.

Heck ya, I'd go. But I wouldn't be the first one out on there. :)

There was an article on this in PopSci recently and they described the anchoring and structural systems. Thought it was pretty cool.

Looks like a great photo op.

Step 1. Set camera controls
Step 2. Take Valium
Step 3. Walk out
Step 4. Walk back
Step 5. Tell spouse not to crop-it

I am sure once you guys saw the photos and video of the anchoring system and how it was built you would have no problems walking out on it.

"Cleanup on walkway three!!" is what you'd hear after I got out there and vomited.

i knew somoene that had a balcony made up entirely of glass like this structure. Hung over the pool...

so if you were a female you were advised NOT to wear a skirt or dress unless you wanted someone ogling your nether region.

But, even that, just 20 feet above a pool made me freak out (moreso when I was drunk). No chance of getting on the skywalk....

I liked the Royal Gorge Bridge (and cable thingy). So I'd go out on this if I had a chance, too. Heights are great if there's a nice sturdy handrail. Don't really have a desire to go hang off cliffs, though.

As a former coworker of mine once said about working on scaffolds, "Once you get 30 or 40 feet up, it doesn't matter. If you fall, you're gonna be all busted up."
