Windows 7 ???? - 02-13-2007, 03:45 PM

just read that one of the MS big wigs slipped on making a comment on the next Windows OS, Windows 7, heck Windows Vista is still in the first stage of commercial avaiability and now Windows 7 may be available in 2009

Let's see....

last 16 bit windows was win 3.11
Also, NT was 3.5
Then, NT 4.0/Win95/98 family is I guess 4.0
Win2000/WinME is 5.0
WinXP is 6.0
Vista is 7.0

so, the next one should be 8.0?

LOL, if they are planning 2009 I would add 3 years give or take a little.

Windows 7 is code named Vienna or something like that. and It should be the 7th version of the Windows OS.

I think MS is getting away from "Named" versions (98,95 2000, Xp, Vista) and going to approach it with a numbered name.

the 7 does not make sense as the next OS version Name from MS, it should be higher if you could very early versions of windows like version 1 and 2. Version 1 was release in 1983

edit: forgot to mention that even though it was spilled that 2009 was the date for the Windows 7, it was said that it probablly would not happen until 2011, which actually means 2013.

Maybe Server2003/XP were more of a point release. Not really new tech, just a few updates, and new UI... 5.5?

and if you knew how long these things take, 8, 9 and 10 are probably in the works as well. Were you thinking that the entire company just took a few months off now that Vista is out??

NT doesn't count.. different code path.

Windows 3.0, circa 1990
Windows 95 (Windows 4.0), circa 1995
Windows 98/ME are 4.x releases
Windows 2000 (first attempt to merge the 16 bit platform with NT) was 5.0
Windows XP was 5.x, released somewhere around 2001/2002?
Vista comes out now in 2007... at least 2 years late by promises I remember in 2001.. is version 6.0

So by that measurement.. I would expect Windows 7.0 to be 2010... keeping the every five years or so to reinvent itself

And all told, I am extremely close to not needing to stick with Windows any longer to support legacy software from my programming days..... so I could care less about Vista or whatever 7.0 is called.

I think by year's end, I won't be using Windows at all....sounds weird but definitely very true. My heart is going to Apple.

I think it will be ready by 2011. They would not be able to recoup all there cost by 2009.
