Google just opened up there email service to the general public today. You no longer need an invite or cell number. I use gmail myself and think it is the best email service out there. Gmail offers free pop access where Yahoo! charges for it.

Gmail is the way to go. It completely blows the other email services away.

Hmmmm, that's weird. I've been using them for awhile, free, w/o invitation or cell number.

I would never use Gmail be cause of the privacy risks associated with it's 'content extraction.'

In fact it maybe in violation of both federal and state wiretap laws.

this happens to your regular email as well, not just gmail. almost all companies monitor employees emails at your place of employment. your home email from your ISP, hotmail , yahoo, or any electronic form of email you use is monitored and data extracted from it.

do a web search for at&t secrete rooms

But those aren't the same as Googles "content extraction" technology. I'm well aware of the many black hat operations scanning mail but the EFF has been successful at stopping such illegal actions.

Here's where gmail differs from illegal black hat work.

At least in the past Google has stood up to the Feds and said "NO" when they wanted to go fishing in their archives but will they always.

P.S. I know my email is not scanned at work as I would be one of the scanners.

Yeah, when I read above that they use the content of your emails for their advertisers and such, that really concerned me that they are going through our emails.

Yeah, that would suck.
And G-mail is hella hard to reverse trace also.
They have munged their headers so that you cannot determine the originating IP of the email to find out where the person logged on (unless you subpoena them - and that's a pain).
