The top TV show of last week was American Idol, with 33.36 million viewers. Current US population is 298 million or so. So about 11% of the US watched it. That means 89% of us didn't bother.
The recent Superbowl brought in 93 million viewers. I can't tell how many of these are in the US, but assuming all were, this is about 31% of US residents. Meaning 69% or more of us didn't bother watching it.
The most popular TV show ever broadcast was the final MASH episode in 1983, with 106 million viewers. US population at the time was about 234 million. Meaning 45% watched it, 55% didn't.
The most popular movie of last year was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. It grossed $423,416,000 in the US. Average ticket prices were around $6.41, giving about 66 million viewers, or 22% of the population. Or, 78% of us never saw that movie.
Sometimes I'll be listening to the radio or hear people talk about some show or movie and I feel like I'm out of the loop because I didn't see it. The reality is, if you watched any specific recent show or movie, you're in a minority, in most cases, a rather small minority- because the majority of us just didn't see that.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.
