I'm picking up a copy of Vista Ultimate from the Microsoft TAM here at my company. But, I'll hold off on installing it until I buy a new hard drive in a month or two. One of the reasons why - VISTA CORRUPTS RAW IMAGES! Yes, you read it right. If you open a RAW image in Vista's explorer it will become corrupted. Evidently, Microsoft just found out about this and is working on a fix.

I usually stay at least one upgrade behind just to avoid all the bugs and fixes. I did buy a new XP machine last summer just for image editing, but most of my computers are running Windows 2000 and a couple of server access machines ar still on Windows 98.

I am with you Don. I will let others find and deal with the bugs and then upgrade after microsoft gets it right. This is just too common for software and technology. I have a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and I am NOT installing it until after the 1st. Service Pack is out.

You're all wimps. Losing all your RAW is a small sacrifice to be the newest and coolest!

I just bought a laptop with Vista...I shoot in RAW and have been using Adobe Lightroom on my other computer. Are you saying that my RAW files will become corrupted if I copy them on my laptop and edit them in Lightroom or Photoshop? Or is it just if I open them in Vista? I did a search on this and read that they only become corrupted if you change the Metadata in Vista...

From what I understand, it happens if you open the file from within Vista explorer to preview the image. My company is a huge Microsoft shop and we have a Microsoft TAM (Territory Account Manager) on-site every day (he has a desk here). He's the one that clued me in about corrupting RAW files. I asked if there would be any issues if the file were opened in something like Bibble or PS and he said that he didn't think that would pose any problems.

The RAW problem is with (this hurts to say it) Nikon NEF's. Opening them in Vista's Explorer can corrupt them. It's no a Microsoft issue - it's actually something caused by Nikon. Nikon is working on a codex fix that should be able to be downloaded shortly.

FWIW, I upgraded my dinosaur Gateway 700C (Intel P4 1.8, 1gig of RAM, nVidia 5200, SB Live) to Vista. The only item I had to replace was the soundcard as Creative Blabs didn't provide drivers for the Live! cards. Dropped in a SB Audigy.

The computer runs as well (if not a little better) than it did under WinXP. Photoshop CS2 runs fine. In fact, Bridge seems to run a little better.

I shoot almost everything in RAW, but my post processing involves converting everything to Adobe Digital Negative (found out that it embeds any RAW changes direct to the file - no XML sidecar as with NEF's)

So far, I'm very happy with it. Perhaps the fact that I got it for free (participated in their Power Together program), along with a free copy of Office 2007 Pro...might have something to do with it [ya think?]

Here's another warning passed along on another board by Richard Bernabe, award-winning nature photographer:

A warning from Chromix:

"Due to Vista's non-handling and mishandling of graphics card
calibration curves it is next to impossible for a professional user to
be confident that their system is properly calibrated and displaying
color correctly. For this reason I do not recommend Vista for
professional workflows at this time. When Microsoft addresses the
calibration-clobbering bug in a future service pack then I think Vista
will make an effective platform for high quality color production."

I know that Richard recently sold his Nikons and is now shooting Canon, so the problems might be broader than just the Nikon NEFs.

Thinking about Vista? Nope. In fact, if I could get anything for them I'd get rid of my remaining two XP boxes. (Well, I guess I'd have to keep one, or put Parallels or Boot Camp on the MBP to support Mapsource and QImage).

True story. I only came close to losing raw files on Vista just once...but I have a cool looking OS...
