I recently got some Bose companion 3 series II speakers and they are excellent. But pricey. Thankfully I wasn't paying for them. They do have a set of companion 2 speakers that are $92 though. Might be worth a look. I went from a frankly silly 5:1 system to one that has a couple of desktop speakers and a subwoofer. Much neater and much better sound too.

I never did understand the need for 5:1 for a computer, especially where you would place the satellite speakers.

I just use a reasonable shelf stereo system (with sub) and run the computer LINE OUT or headphone into the stereo's AUX input.

If you want to go on the lower cost end, the Logitech 2.1 setups sound really good & won't break the bank.

When you get past the frustration and annoyance of setting up and wiring in the speakers, the surround sound stuff can be amazingly immersive for games. You can actually hear people creeping up behind you, get directional information about gun shots etc.

Works really well actually.

but it is a pain to set up and more than you need for anything other than serious gaming.

Here's one for 149.99...

I owned these once, and they sounded very, very nice! It died last year (Owned it for about 4 yrs or so), but I would definitely buy another one though, the sound was great.

I was going to say klipsch, love mine. Until I saw you said no more than $150. I would say look at these speakers for your price range.
1. Creative Inspire Inspire P5800
2. Edifier R501
3. Swan M200 Studio
4. Logitech 5300

I second Gordon, I have a set of bose Companion 3 (not II) and they are excellent. Small yet provide great sound quality.

I'll second a nice Klipsch 2.1 system: http://www.klipsch.com/products/deta...media-2-1.aspx, I believe, is what I have. Should be able to find them in your price range. I have them discreetly set up here at my office at the paper and after 5 p.m., I can rattle the windows. Beautiful clarity from whisper-low to blazing-loud. I can't say enough good about them. I think I picked mine up at Best Buy a couple of years ago.
