Unhappy Got some bad news today - Update - 02-23-2007, 05:18 PM

Just got a call from back home, my step mom has breast cancer and is heading to Houston next week for a mastectomy followed by radiation therapy. We don’t know yet if it’s spread further or not at this time either. I have not had a chance to talk to her yet to see how she is doing but she is a very vibrate person and I’m sure she will fight this with everything she has.

My wife went through cancer surgery and radiation this summer and fall and our prayers are with you. Give you step-mom lots of hugs they will help as much as all the medications can.

Is she going to MD Anderson? That is one of the best Cancer Hospitals in the country if not the best.

Good luck on a speedy recovery for her and I will keep her in my prayers.

Prayers from our family to yours. My dad went to MD Anderson for throat cancer, lived twenty-years cancer free after that. They are the best for patients and the family. Keep us posted on her speedy recovery.

Like so many others, my brother was treated at MD Anderson for an advanced leukemia. So far, he has been 10 years cancer free. Your step-mom is going to the best...both in terms of treatment and patient relations. You can feel good knowing that.

My prayers are with your step-mom and your entire family.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Laurie. This should serve as a reminder to all of us women (and men who have women in their lives) to do monthly self-exams and have annual mammograms. Early detection saves lives. I have an aunt and two cousins who have suffered through this disease, and all three have come away with a cure due to early detection and treatment. I will keep your family in my prayers and send lots of positive thoughts your way.

Certainly not to hijack the thread, but this is also a good reason for everyone to visit the Komen for the Cure website and support their research. I heard on CNN that they are starting a new ad campaign soon, and will have t-shirts that say "If you're going to stare at my breasts, you could at least donate a dollar to save them." Gotta get me one of those! ;)

Laurie,
I'm so sorry to hear this bad news. MD Anderson in Houston is an awesome cancer hospital. I'll pray for her. She's in very good hands here in Houston.
