I think that was the wrong story. The story you posted nathan is about a child predator

sorry, the web link doesn't give a lot of detail, but the news report a few minutes ago, mentioned it and the fact that he had a booth in a flea market near Airline.....

I don't know if the link has been changed but the title is "Photographer accused of child porn, sexual assault". It also mentions the fact that he had a legit photography business also. Sounds like a pretty sorry waste of oxygen to me, photographer or not.

The very first line of the article mentions it:
"HOUSTON -- A photographer charged in connection with crimes against children could have more victims, officials told KPRC Local 2 Monday."

We have to face the fact the people like him are going to use photography as a way to get closer to children and or women. There are no back ground checks to become a photographer, no verification process for people to use. So it's pretty easy for someone to either claim to be or even become a photographer as a ruse.

also not to mention that if you are out in public with your camera people will tend to first think you are a perv/predator and not someone who enjoys photography.

and that's what bothers me most about these stories...I'm all for being cautious, but this just casts a darker shadow on the profession......

I completely agree, but what can we do to change that? (open for discussion)

We have the same problem in my profession as a private investigator. A few bad apples get the news. And those posing as PIs (unlicensed, etc) also get called private investigators, even when they are not.

The best way to avoid "shadows" cast upon yourself, and that is about all you can worry about, yourself, is to always CYA. Never shoot a minor child, male or female without a guardian of legal age or parent in the room at the same time. I even do this for brides...they have to bring someone with them to the shoot.

You have to ask yourself, too, how did this slime ball get these kids alone to do this?? Not trying to take anything away from what he did, but if my kid were at a photographers studio, I would NOT let them be alone with that photographer. Some of the blame has to be placed on the parents. You never take chances and or risks with someone you do not know...and then, you just don't do it with some you do know!

I am glad they got him thou. Makes it harder for the next pervert to pull off.

a-hah! they changed the text! the word photographer was not in the link nor in the title as originally opened by myself, and hitting it again a few minutes later, viola! now it is there.....where's a serious revision control when you need it??? (one of my pet peeves...)

what can we do about it?

Simply be an example of good. It goes for whatever you do, be it photographer, engineer, lawyer or whatever.
