Me, Pika and the Safey Irony ... - 02-27-2007, 11:09 AM

So last night I had to work late. I know I know, you are all shocked. But it wasn't too late, so it could be worse. But I digress.

So I am driving home and I am in the neighborhood tooling along with my co-pilot and partner in crime. You know, as an aside maybe I need a bumper sticker that says "Pika is my co-pilot"? Hmmmm.

Anyways, it is dark but not too terribly late in the evening and we are bopping out to "Baby's Got Back" when suddenly we see this unidentified light on the road. A bright light. A single light. A bright, single light as it were.

"What the hell is that?" I can always count on Pika to be Johnny on the Spot with the "I don't know".

At first I wasn't really sure what it was myself. Then through the process of deductive reasoning I concluded it was a light for a bicycler. "It's a light for a bicycler."

"Dude! That high? What is it, one of those turn of the century French big wheelers?" No let me take a moment to say that would have been cool. But not just like the old Froggy version. I am talking about a 21st century big wheel bicycle.

Aluminum alloy frame. All terrain tire. Impact absorbing gel seat. Magnesium handlebars. Hell yeah man! That would be like the Hummer of bikes!

But back to the point:

So as we get closer (which happens pretty quickly at 30 miles an hour) we see that while it is in fact a light FOR a bicycle it is not in fact a light ON a bicycle. No indeedy. This my friends was an entirely new world of bicycle safety. It was ....

... the Amazing Self Lit Safety Idiot Helmet!

Seriously. On the front was the big honking headlight that was brighter than my car's headlights. And, this was the best part, starting at about the ear and going all the way around the back were .... tee hee .... flashing red LED's! No crap. Flashing red LED's! And on top was a little black battery pack to run it all I am assuming. That or it was a GPS module or a cappuccino machine. One of the three is what I am guessing.

Well by the time Pika and I were close enough to see this contraption we are laughing ourselves senseless. I mean hilarity ensued en masse. So much so that I guess the guy could hear us because he looks in my direction. And between the side splitting humor and that damn bright light I was blinded. And for a split second I almost lost control of my car. And since we going around a bend in the road I would have nailed this guy like a 3 penny tack.

But luckily I composed myself enough to avoid killing the person trying to remain healthy. Which would have been, at least in my opinion, ironic.

Tee hee ... flashing red light on a helmet. I love it.

Prophet out.
