Part time photog idea... opinions?? - 02-27-2007, 11:59 AM

Hi All,
I work 28 days in Africa and have 28 days off with a lot of free time during my 28 days off.
I saw this place and thought it might work as a part time photographer job.

www.leavethecamera.com

Does anyone have any experience or opinions on them?

I emailed them to see if they were interested.
It would be great to be able to use the time I have off to work as a photographer without having to make the leap to full time.

Thanks

I'll start by saying that I am no expert. I looked over the site. Doesn't a photog that has his own business already do this stuff and gets to keep all of the revenue? Maybe I read it wrong but to me it sounds like the photog still has to do all the leg work and LTC does the printing and shipping.

just my $.01

Your points are valid.

However.
My present job takes me away from the US for 28 days straight which makes it hard to run any sort of business.
They would be doing all the work that I could not such as line up jobs, interact with customers and sell the finished product.

My name would still get out and I would be able to branch out on my own at some point if I wanted.

Sorry, my bad. I read it wrong. Keep us updated as to what they respond from your inquiry.

I looked at the page and the web site. All they are is a clearing house and lab. You still have to line up the events you shoot. While its cool not to have to worry with orders and shipping the product out you still have to get all your jobs yourself. So set up a free account at photoreflect(dont have one and dont work for them) upload your photos and get one of there labs do the work for you . So depending on rates there is no different then many other sites that do the same thing.

Steve,
Now that I read it again it looks like you are right.
I was under the impression at first that they lined up work for you after I saw a video he made.
Video

Thanks

You are all correct. Everyone has events in their home town or community that they can contact, photograph, and collect fees to be there. The fees are for a copy of all the photos you take at the event and you still get to sell them on-line. Ever wanted to get backstage at a big concert or get inside the fence at a rodeo? With this system, you can do just that. We shot over 20 events the 1st year. Now we are doing great just shooting the repeat business. We also got published in over a dozen national magazines in the 1st year. You don't work for us. You work for yourself. If you are good enough to get asked to take the pics, you are good enough to get paid for it. We are more than a clearing house. You set your own pricing. We take personal care of your customers after the shoot. You set your own work days and weeks. Sports, fairs, cook offs, boat shows... anything. Good luck and good hunting. Curtis

Is my assumption correct that you represent LeavetheCamera? Or, do you have a working relationship as mentioned on their page ? I would be curious about this, and would like some references from photogs utilizing this "service".

I am the owner. We are trying to recruit new photographers that keep their cameras in the closet on weekends. We have, in the past, had up to 5 photographers using this system. We have not officially launched the new offer. It was supposed to start March 15. We get calls and e-mails from places we can't service. We would love to refer these shoots out to someone in that area. 70% commissions for taking and uploading the pics is darn good. But, it is not for everyone. It takes some work to get started and keep fresh photos on the site. We hope people will see the value because we offer business cards, brochures, secrity badges, leads, and more. We have done well and would like to share. Thanks for the input. Curtis
