A/V sync problem burning DVD's - 03-03-2007, 07:11 PM

Does anybody know how to solve the audio-video sync problem when burning DVD's? I used to burn DVD's using my computer of home videos/recorded TV shows that I ripped to my hard drive. No sync problems when I played the recorded video on my hard drive. I couldn't figure out the sync problem, so I stopped burning. Now, we bought a stand-alone Sony DVD recorder, and guess what? Same audio-video sync problem. Many people might not notice the sync problem, but it drives me mad!! I am totally baffled with the whole DVD burning process, anyway, and I've never found a way to get consistently good quality burns that will play on multiple DVD players. It seems like each burner has its own quirks and only works well with certain DVD disc brands and players. Can anybody help?

are you editing the video files in anyway? Are you capturing the video in Drop Frame or non Drop Frame. Is your encoding single or double pass? Are you shooting in 24P and trying to playback on a non 24P system?

those are a few of the issues I can think of off the top of my head.

are you recording analog TV or dtv and is it coming on to recorder via antenna or are you passing the a?v through any other devices? There are some latency issues with dtv and mpeg compression/ decompression on some devices.

Are you making the mistake of using a PC and your operating system (cough cough XP) is chewing up resources while burning? :D

LOL!

The audio is encoded with the video.. slow machine would not affect the sync during burning process. When I was first in the video biz and got my first DVD burner I was using a Pentium II and Win95. Sync issues that I saw were mainly due to encoder...Pixelation and/or skipping was more from bad or inferior media.

Some things to look for: Is your audio MPEG audio or AC3 (Dolby Digital)? Also, what bit rate/compression ratio are you encoding at?

Good luck!

Some very good questions. I'll have to see what all my settings are. On my first attempt, I was using WinDVD recorder (came witht the PC) to rip an analog signal (coax cable from TIVO to my VCR output-At the time I was running TV signal thru the VCR first). The software ripped the video to mpg. Then burning the DVD I used either the WinDVD program, or the computer's default burning program (easy CD, Roxio). I forget which. I recorded on the highest quality setting and burned the DVD to the highest quality setting available. On the latest attempt, it was also an analog signal (RCA), but this time using our new Sony stand alone DVD recorder (highest quality setting also).

I don't think that burning regular consumer grade DVD's should be this difficult. Are the hardware and software manufacturers expecting the average consumer to keep track of things like latency issues, drop frame, single vs double pass, 24P systems?
