Blurb jacket comparison - 03-05-2007, 07:36 PM

I just got new books in. The hardcover on the right is my first book from a month ago. The middle book is hardcover just recieved today and softcover on left also just received today. There is a lot of color difference between the three. The inside pages on the new books look a tad lighter but not enough to complain about. I may contact them and see if they can re-do the slip cover (jacket) on the hard cover books I bought. Has anyone else done a re-order yet and seen color shift on the jackets?

That's insane. I'll never order another book from Blurb. It's kinda like putting a quarter in a gumball machine and having no control over which colors you're going to get.

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

I noticed my softcover was true b/w and the hard cover was sepia toned as well.

I've seen two blurb books... both had terrible colors on the covers and dust jackets.. the pages were very thin (and felt like they would be very easy to tear).. and the covers felt flimsy.

The standard AsukaBook is a (small) step above that... colors are pretty close to accurate (sRGB or AdobeRGB colorspace), pages and covers are more durable.

The EX AsukaBook is equal measure above that.. the pages have a nice, thick feel and feel extremely difficult to tear - even on purpose, and the slipcovers are of a higher quality as well.

Again, there may be a place for any of these (or none of these) in your particular services.... but the Standard AsukaBook is the low end of what I personally felt comfortable offering.

Has anyone contacted Blurb and heard anything from them on these issues ?

That seems like a pretty wide range of different results - was it all from the same original files ?

Just a small Side note: Is there any of these photo album companies that would be willing to give a free sample book away that way I could show it to clients to get them to buy these books? or is it something that I would need to stop being a tight wad about and just buy some with my own images in them to show to clients?

Oh and thanks for the heads up. I ALMOST bought one today =( Glad I didnt!

All I did was correct a few typos and uploaded the edited version (second version) but made no changes to photos, colors etc...

I tried to use the email address that I had used over a month ago (support@blurb.com) because I wanted to attach the photo I made but that email address has been cancelled and it said to use the forum on their website. Unfortunately I can not attach the picture in that contact form to show them the books. So I just sent tech support an email letting them know about it and just now got back their default message of

Thanks for alerting us about those technical difficulties youve been having. We have received your customer support request, and wanted to let you know that you'll be hearing back from us within two business days. We are thrilled that so many of you are making such fantastic books. The result is that Blurb is growing, we're hiring some great new people to support you, and we appreciate your patience as we get new folks on board to deliver top-notch service.

For future reference, your case has been assigned this number: 070305-000136.

See you in print soon,
The Blurberati
