Tragic loss for our family - 03-05-2007, 10:56 PM

I am having a really hard time right now...my sweet, beloved chihuahua Peanut was killed this evening after being hit by a car. We aren't sure how he got out of the house, but he did, and as always, ran to the middle of the road for no obvious reason. We are all just devistated. I've held it together for a few hours but now that the house is quiet and the boys are finally asleep, it's really hitting me that he's gone. It's ironic that I can teach coping skills to hundreds of students but now that it's time for me to cope with a loss I can't find a way to handle it. I have many sweet memories of this crazy little dog and nothing will ever replace him in my heart or the hearts of my little boys. I think that's the hardest part for me, is helping them to deal with this loss. They're just completely heartbroken and it kills me to see them hurting so badly. I thought it might make me feel better to post a few pictures i have taken of him over the past three and a half years, but looking at them is really hard for me to do right now. I am glad that the kids didn't witness the event, and that Peanut didn't suffer or even know what hit him...but I do have faith that the idiot blazing down our road at jet speed gets what Karma has to offer him someday.

You know, I never understood how people could get so attached to dogs, but we got our first dog about a year ago for my partner's birthday, and we just love him so much and we are so protective of him, so I really feel for you, Laurie. You'll miss him, but every day will be a little easier I'm sure.

I am saddened by your loss. We give equally to those special canine friends who share our lives and give us their unconditional love. They are taken too soon. I hope that this poem - Rainbow Bridge - will be of some comfort to you.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

those pictures are precious.
i can't imagine the sudden loss of this cute little guy. my dog is about 14 and a half years so i'll probably be going through a loss soon. it's unbelievable how attached we can get, but they're worth it.
i'm sorry you and your boys have to go through this.

Laurie - I'm so sorry. There's nothing really that any of us can say that will make the pain go away, but he may be gone, but never forgotten.

*hugs*

Sorry for your loss Laurie. I know it hurts like the dickens right now and it's probably gonna hurt for a while. Time heals. Be thankful for the photos and the memories you and your family had with Peanut. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I too am sorry for your loss. Depending on the age of your kids, you may want to have a memorial of some kind or do something to honor Peanut's memory. We did something similar before and my son remembered it years later.
