This could only come from California. Santa Monica, Calif., to try squirrel birth control shots an Associated Press report 03/05/07
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Poison didn't work. Neither did gassing or euthanasia.
Now officials in Santa Monica, California, are going to use a new method to control the city's squirrel population -- birth control.
This summer, officials will begin injecting squirrels in the city's Palisades Park with a vaccine that stunts their sexual development.
About a thousand squirrels live in the park now, and health officials say they pose a public health risk. Officials say the animals are aggressive and may carry rabies or fleas that spread disease.
Santa Monica's been cited five times in the last nine years for squirrel overpopulation. But previous suppression methods, like euthanasia, angered animal activists. One activist says she's O-K with the new approach. But she believes the public health risk is overblown. Another California city, Berkeley, already uses the birth control vaccine on squirrels.
The only thing worse than an aggressive squirrel is a love crazed squirrel. I can't wait to see all the "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" types out there chasing these squirrels down to give them injections. Next they will set up booths to hand out squirrel prophylactics!
Planned Squirrelhood?
Why not just bring in some folks from East Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas with .22's and have a big cookout. Squirrel is kind of stringy but it makes great gravy for biscuits.
Maybe we could get them to come out to West Texas and chase down Prairie Dogs for shots.
I am so glad the government is helping out with such a serious problem as amorous squirrels when they could be wasting time and tax money looking into pothole repair and water treatment.
I believe the Marines have a two word saying for this. The first word is "cluster". |
