im quiting smoking!!!! - 03-07-2007, 10:07 PM

After 22 years of smoking and many failed attempts Im giving it another go.

went to the Dr. today and got a new med (been out just over a year or so) called Chantrix. it supposed to block the nicotine from reaching the receptors in your brain that crave nicotine thus reducing the urge to smoke.

Hopefully during spring break next week when I am on vacation this stuff will start to work.

wish me luck....

James

Good luck! Let me know if it works. My wife told me about some new drug that a lot of people at her office are taking to quit and it seems to be working. She said half of the smokers at her job are on it and they are all happy about it. Its probably the same one.

Hey, I wish you the best. I have never smoked, but I imagine, it has got to be the hardest thing any one can can ever do in their life. I think unless you have been there, you can't imagine how hard it is. I watched my father-in-law die from emphysema -he was in the Air Force- and it was miserable-even watching it- change everything you do and ask for all the help you can!!!Keep us informed!!

That is great! Keep us informed as to how it goes. I know several people who would be interested in trying it.

its probably the same one. My Dr. said he wrote 4 prescriptions last year for this Chantrix and he has already written 50 this year. He said it has really taken off and has about a 75% success rate

I talked to some one who is taking it and he said he had some minor hallucinations. which depending on the hallucinations may not be all bad

also with this med is a support web site to help you quit. its supposed to guide you and help you. also there is a support line to call and talk to some one.

it is expensive. it was $114 regular price and my insurance only paid for $20 of it, so it cost me $94 for the first month of pills

Good luck and I hope you do. I have never tried it and don't plan to. My grandfather died when I was 5 and I really never new him but I always wish I did. I only have faint memories of him being hooked up to oxygen when I went over to see him.

Good Luck James

Believe you can and you will.
Faith can move mountains.

I would like to get my mother on it.
She had surgery for lung cancer in December and is back smoking already!

You can do that.
Being a smoker (ya'll hate me now, right?), I recently cut smoking by 2/3, from about 25 a day to 8. Bought a shiny silver box for my smokes, which holds exactly 8 of them. That's now my daily rate, I won't fill it second time in one day. Works suprisingly good, I dare to say it was quite easy to do. Still 8 to go, but working it to the magic 0.
Get support anywhere you can, without it you're lost. Thumbs up for you,
Tomas

just a word to the money-wise - you can get chantix at sam's for $99 a month. i tried to get my prescription filled at walgreens - it was $247!!! i did complain to the manager there too, and asked him what the hell that was all about.

it worked for me - i started the med back in later october...and you can do it - this medicine really makes the difference!!!

good luck and pm me if you need a support push!
