Thumbs down They paid for that? - 03-07-2007, 11:43 PM

My girlfriend came home from work with a poster of her daughter's tennis team.
It had a group shot in the middle and individual pictures all around with some text above the group shot.
I looked at it and didn't see one decent shot in the whole poster!

It's been a long time since I've done any real photo work but even I could tell right off the bat that who ever took those pictures had not one clue.

I can't believe they paid someone to actually do that.
Out of 22 kids only 4 had properly exposed faces. The rest were hidden in shadows (no fill flash). Two had the tops of their heads cropped off. 5 had something sticking out of their head (fence post or light pole)
18 of them were shot with a high contrast back ground of sky on top and black fence about half way down with a couple of them going right thru the head area. Of course the black fence was way underexposed and looked like solid black.

Just boggles me to think that they paid good money for someone to come out and take those pictures. (hope that photographer isn't reading this)

Thanks for letting me vent.

First thing... they might not have paid anything. Second thing... they might not have paid much.

I've seen a lot of really good work on A&M sports posters, and some really bad work. I guess it all comes down to connections, and the average person isn't nearly as critical of image quality as we are.

There are a lot of groups around here that the coach or another student took the photo for the poster. They think they are saving money. Which is funny cuz if they would just let me take their individuals/group I'd let them use the group for ad space.

Just remember, everyone with a digital camera now is a professional photographer (just kidding). Maybe it was free..

I would have done it for free and done a lot better job.
Maybe I'm too critical.

I think you hit the nail on the head.
"everyone with a digital camera now is a professional photographer"
Example:
A woman came to take pictures at our family reunion.
Same story. Washed out colors, poor back grounds, heads in the middle of the picture, no fill flash, posts and trees sticking out of peoples heads. Very amateurish but I bet she made $500 to 600 that day. (she wanted $30 for a small package)
