PC upgrade - finally - 03-19-2007, 02:12 PM

I just orderd the guts to upgrade my PC. now I can wait to put it all together

Im getting

1ea AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz Socket AM2 Processor
1ea ASUS M2N-E SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
3ea Patriot 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory
1ea Western Digital 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
2ea Western Digital 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
1ea HIPER HPU-4K530-MS ATX12V v2.2 530W Power Supply

this should be a noticible differance over my current set up with a 2ghz single core CPU and only 768mb of memory

Yes... that should be much more "peppy" than your previous system.

Looks like it's going to be a nice machine.
What video card did you use?

I just upgraded my old 2ghz machine to something similar to yours and it's night and day difference.
Let us know how it turns out.

Why buy a used monitor when you can have a new one for really cheap. It's hard to make good digital images if you can't see them correctly is my point...

Watch the Fry's and PC Mall ads for specials on Viewsonic and Samsung units if you're on a budget.

Why 3GB and not a even 4GB of memory? And why the 80GB HD, unless you are using that from your old machine.

the used monitor will be for my daughter, so the cheaper the better. plus it would be a bonus to help out a fellow TPF'er if they were looking to unload one

I thought that XP could not handle more than 3gig of memory, or that it cant utilize more than 3.5gig, so thats what I went with.

the 80gig hd will be the OS and program drive. the 250's will be my data/photo storage drives.

Here's a thought..., that's not really cost effective, but definitely yields results. Since you've gone with an 80 gig HD for the OS, you could have gone for the 74 gig raptor for the OS and then use one 36 gig raptor for your photoshop scratch drive. (like I previously said, not cost effective)

7200 rpm to 10000rpm might not seem like much for the cost difference but you definitely see the difference in drive performance. It's like waking up your system.

I got mine (refurb) from 3btech.com for $149.00. 17" LCD by White-Westinghouse..... I love it! It has brightness to spare, and is crisp as a green apple! It also has a WHOLE lt more adjustability than any monitor I have ever had.
