Rangers rename stadium

By DAVE SESSIONS
The Rangers announced today that they have ended their deal with Ameriquest and are renaming their stadium “Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.”

After nearly three years of corporate sponsorship, the club reached an agreement with the mortgage company to terminate the $75 million, 30-year lease they announced on May 7, 2004.

Owner Tom Hicks said the Rangers will change all the signage in and around the stadium by the April 6 home opener.

“It was worth more to me over the next 26 years to have our brand back,” Hicks said. “We’ve had a great partnership with the City of Arlington and we wanted to honor that relationship, too.”

The Ameriquest bell in left field will be gone soon, Hicks said, and replaced by seats. Ameriquest will discontinue its $2.5 million yearly payments and remove its advertisements in the ballpark. The company had three signs in the outfield, plus ads in the dugout and behind the plate.

The Rangers began talking to Ameriquest about a year ago in hopes of making the change, with significant progress coming about four months ago, Hicks and team president Jeff Cogen said.

“We wanted the Rangers’ logo on our ballpark, not somebody else’s,” Cogen said.

The stadium was known as “The Ballpark in Arlington” from 1994-2004. With the Cowboys’ new stadium and the Glory Park development coming, Hicks said, the Rangers felt another change was necessary.

I never referred to it at the other name....it's always been the Ballpark to me.

Glad to know that money wasn't the big issue...that's a lot to give up for naming rights.

Yep, I'm glad to see it back to the ball park name. I got used to that name and never liked it when it got changed. I'm looking forward to this year for the Rangers too. Been hearing some good stuff about the pitching. I just hope it continues during the regular season.

Well Hell yeah..

I honestly cannot believe this...Not in the times of big corporate $ and the willingness to sell every ounce of possible real estate for advertising revenue...

Well done Tom. And thank you John for posting this!
