Question Anyone know anything about Adobe InDesign? - 03-27-2007, 02:26 PM

I am designing a program to be sold at a dance recital...actually 2 programs! They will probably have around 40 pages. I have InDesign, but it is so confusing. I don't understand how to set it up as far as page sizes. The finished book will be 8 1/2 x 11, so the actual pages are 17"w x 11"h. So how do I set that up in InDesign? Thanks for any advice!

Hi Cyndi;

You set it up under new, then select new document and go from there. InDesign has a very good help menu on top and an online help menu as well. I take it you have looked at your manual? InDesign is an extremely powerful page layout program and has lots of features, depending on your version. I have used Quark and InDesign and both have their advantages. But InDesign with other adobe products allows me to map for color profiling throughout the work flow. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat. We do our newspaper in InDesign. www.thecherokeean.com

Try the help menu if you do not have the manual.

When you get the dialog box for the new document - make sure the box for "Facing Pages" is checked. This will set-up the document for a book with left and right facing pages.

Side note generally when doing spreads like that - have your total page number divisible by 4. One full spead, 17x11, is equal to 4 pages.

Thanks so much for the tips, y'all! I haven't even started on the program yet, but I know when I've used this software to do programs in the past, i could never figure out what size to make the pages because they use the weird pica stuff. Thanks again for your help!!!

Go to your preferences window and choose units & increments and change your ruler guides to inches, by default it is set to picas and points.
