I've turned this into a travelogue; first with must-see suggestions, then with our take on the islands, given the time alotted. Please comment and share similar island shots.

So, here's the OAHU challenge. You are on the island with your favorite second shooter. Everything "has been done" before: - Where would you go? Must dos?
- How would you approach certain scenes?
- What equipment/lenses should I add?
I already have: Nikon, 50mm 1.4 primary, macro adapter, 18-70 1:3.5-4.5G, 28-300. If you have a subject in mind, how would you suggest capturing the image in a new, fresh way?

Oahu?
Less shot destinations..
Punchbowl - military cemetary in an extinct volcanic crater http://www.alternative-hawaii.com/drives/oahu/ph.htm
Actually... that site has a bunch of cool ideas for Oahu: http://www.alternative-hawaii.com/byotgdxo.htm

Oahu. Only one place for me...
The North Shore - Pipeline, Sunset, & Waimea Bay.
I've seen Mavricks big, but never the pipe or Waimea.
Big glass required.

Hmm . . .if I were the second shooter, I'd be making my case for going to one of the other islands . . lol.
I've been to Hawaii several times (lucky enough to have family there!) and I'd be more likely to go to the Big Island (Hawaii) or Maui. Oahu was/is just faarrr too touristy. But hey, for not a lot of money, you can buy island-hopper tickets from Hawaiian Airlines and go visit some of the other islands.
On Hawaii there is a beautiful Buddhist monastary, very peaceful and you can even stay there overnight (kind of a B&B thing). Close to the monastary is also the southern-most point in the US. There's Volcano's National Park, which in a way is overshot, but is also an ever-changing landscape. There are several small historic churches, including a specific one I remember where you can look out the door of the church, across the cemetary and out to the ocean, makes a gorgeous sunset shot. There are all kinds of coffee plantations, small ones, where the owners are happy to let you come on the property, and take picutres and maybe have a tour. There's a stretch of road, I think it's N of Kona where it's all black lava, and people bring white coral and "write" on the lava by forming letters with the pieces of coral, very cool.
If you choose to stay in Oahu, seriously consider a day or two on some of the other islands, and if you can afford it, go to dinner at Roy's!

Adding it to the blotter.
Brad, that link you have is very helpful! We'll have to talk during a break in class.
Scott, interesting way to "take the waters". May have to rent some big glass. Are there any good lens rentals on the island?
Other thoughts?

My knowledge of the island is limited and strongly influenced by my parents' love of the place... my dad was stationed there when I was very little (we left when I was 5)... I've been back once since (on the way back to the States from Okinawa, Japan) and I was rather underwhelmed.... but a lot of that has to do with my dislike for large cities and tourist traps..... both of which describe Honolulu pretty well.

Stopped in at a camera stop in Plano and ran into a patron who works for an american airline here in the DFW area... <<NO PLUGS HERE>>
Her suggestions, and a hastily drawn map included:
Wakki Beach's Outrigger Hotel and Cheesecake Factory
Huabama Bay, the snorkeling place to be. Come EARLY.
Wait till they come around at the beaches and offer the outriggers and "catamaran or other sunset cruise". Tell them you are "repeat customer" and you might get a discount...implied haggling seems to work.
Top of the Sheraton for happy hour.
Blowhole! West side.
Pipeline. North shore.
Avoid NE side of island to get to North shore.
Seriously, thanks to all with suggestions and looking for any more.

I'd love to go back to Hawaii some day...cliff jumping for me but I don't think any camera would hold up too well. Waikiki at night is beautiful...China town is awesome, especially the restaurants but if you've never grown up around ratty looking restaurants, you might call the officials on unsanitary conditions haha. North Shore is a must...I'm bummed we missed it last time. | | | |

You might want to try going to Sea Life Park. I used to have a membership there and took my daughter all the time when I was stationed there. It is like Sea World, dolphins, killer whales etc. http://www.sealifeparkhawaii.com/ There used to be a restaurant near the Arizona memorial and the Naval base marina called The Marina Restaurant. It overlooked the Uss Arizona Memorial and Ford Island. They had great food, thursday nights were all you could eat seafood nights. If it is still there, eat there in the evening and you can get a picture of the sun setting on the memorial while you dine.
