Photography Series - 04-12-2007, 12:19 PM

I have begun thinking that to maybe help learn certain concepts that I would do a series of a subject(s). I know there are several tpf'ers that have done a series(es). Did you just make a list of a subject(s) and then a list of the shots that you envision? I know ideas are probably pretty personal, but any suggestions on any info about doing a photography series?

I started and haven't finished, a series tentatively titled " The gates of Texas" that would show different ranch gates, etc.

I don't know if it will ever amount to a book or anything (probably already been done to death), but it does give me a focus to get out of the house and search for subjects.
Along the way, I have run across a lot of other photogenic locations, and generally had a good time...

When questioned by locals, police, etc. I have a good story to tell them that they buy into...

Nothing so rigours for my series. I usually start with some good shoots I got and think, "I like doing this topic just keep working on it and thinking of new ways to do it.

I may have general idea of a shot or shots what I want and the light but serendipty is just a big a factor as planing.

I would say in the end you shot a series by finding a theme you like and shooting, shooting and shooting some more and before long you have a series.

Here are some of mine.

Texas Cafes

Dublin nights

Texas Parish

Roadkill

You should have some passion about what you are doing or you'll burn out on it.

Scott, I most often have several series going at the same time. I do not make lists or plan out the series except in generalities in my head regarding what I am trying or wishing to accomplish. For three years I have been doing a series on the six month life cycle of the Magnolia blossom and since 2002 my wife and I have been doing a series on the outdoor or public art in Houston which will never be finished. About a year a go a friend in the Bronx and I did a short series I really enjoyed on trees. I was interested in looking at the tree from the standpoint of what it has symbolized in religion and how the tree has been regarded in ancient religions. It was a great series that brought into play not only the photography and trying to find the right trees but the research that increases knowledge. Series are a great way to work and can sure ward off writers block. Tom and John have it right. Find something that interests you and start shooting.
