Garner State Park - 04-13-2007, 12:32 PM

Going there for a couple days next weekend. We are gonna stay in one of the cabins.

Any things I should be sure to check out. Of course, looking for the great photographic moments.

Any input is good.

there is some nice sceneray along the river and you should be pretty close if staying in a cabin. I think they have like a social night for the kids on Saturday nights at the club house if I remember correctly. other than that im not sure what else is in the park. we spent too much time tubing on the river to enjoy the park.

summer time is good to catch some tubers in action

If you have time, you might want to go over to Lost Maples SP. Very nice. I was there last June.

yes there is an awesome drive from Garner to Lost Maples

its about 27 miles and its some very pretty country.

take the highway out of the park HWY 83 North to HWY 337 (about 9 miles) to Leaky then go right follow 337 to Vanderpool which is about 14 miles. then go North on 187 until you get to Lost Maples.

Lost Maples is a nice and small park and some good easy hiking trails

Mark - beautiful country around there. Take the advice to go to Leakey then East on 337, this is a beautiful drive.... just watch out if you are out after dark... lots of deer on the roads!

Suggestions for places to shoot:
1. In Concan on the bluffs by the Frio river
2. In Leakey just east on 337 by the Frio river
3. Just about anywhere on 337 east out of Leakey
4. Around Lost Maples SP

Suggestions for places to eat:
1. Concan (just South of Garner SP) US83 South to 127 then East about a mile to Neal's (on the Right next to the Frio River) for great Chicken Fried Steaks and hamburgers.
2. Leakey (just North of Garner SP) US 83 North. Vinnie's - this is great Italian food and great pizzas.
3. Vanderpool (North of Garner SP) US 83 North to 337 then East to Vanderpool then North on 187 (just like going to Lost Maples SP). Before you get to Lost Maples, you will see/pass the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum on the left. They are only open on Fri/Sat/Sun 10am-5pm. They have some really beautiful old motorcycles. The ACE CAFE has outstanding hamburgers and Australian Meat Pies... cafe open 11am-3pm.
---No Admission to the Museum, if you are only going to the Cafe--

Enjoy your trip!

Garner State Park - 04-16-2007, 04:01 PM

When I was much younger, my entire family would go to Garner State Park and camp for two weeks at a time. This photo was taken somewhere around 1955. The trailer was army surplus from WW II. Believe it or not, I still have it. My father rebuilt it several time.

Garner was alot different then, but was alot of fun. We continued going every year until about 1962.

There's a cave somewhere in the park that's cool too. I've spent many of summers there. . . the nightly dances are always fun. . . lots of people who've learned to dance there two step away.

Garner has some really nice hiking trails. Most are not too bad when the weather's dry. The rocks get slippery when things get wet though.

Don, that's an amazing shot!

This is the river just before the falls. The hill in the background is where the trails begin.

A scenic overview at the park:

Don, that is a great photo. Bet you have lots of fond memories of camping with your family. Even more amazing is that you still have the 'camper'.

Don - I dig the shot. And you still have the trailer. Awesome!

Elan - Very nice shots. Great detail, great colors.

Thanks Al for the suggestions.

This is the same old trailer after my father made it into a camper. It has been sitting under that tree since 1982.
