OMG! 31 Dead at Virginia Tech - 04-16-2007, 02:44 PM

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416/..._tech_shooting

Some students bitterly questioned why the gunman was able to strike a second time, two hours after the bloodshed began.

"What happened today this was ridiculous," student Jason Piatt told CNN. He said the first warning from the university of a shooting on campus came in an e-mail about two hours after the first deadly burst of gunfire. "While they're sending out that e-mail, 22 more people got killed," Piatt said.

IMHO - Using email as your sole protection in this world is placing faith in the wrong technology. I hope that the discussion on that student's comment disappears before it starts. I also hope that there was some other warning mechanism on campus as part of their disaster response plan.

The reports seem to indicate that the gunman was methodical. I read that as a person with a plan. Our younger people suffer from digital recorders and 46 minute solutions. I like CSI like anyone, but resolutions don't happen that quickly.

What happened and is still unfolding is tragic. Prayer and outreaching in love is the appropriate response.

The more I watch this press conference, the more furious I become..

Question: "Is there a plan to lock down the campus?"
VP of Virginia Tech "That's not in my communication plan.."

Question: "Why did you wait 2 hours to notify students after the first shooting?"
Chief of Police: "We had information that this was an isolated incident and the shooter had left the campus or the state..."

Mass shooting and you don't tell anyone? WTF?!? Even around here if there's a guy loose with a gun all public schools within MILES of the incident get locked down...clearly he made the wrong decision. But even an idiot should put out some sort of mass bulletin to news media and all police to be on the lookout for a guy with a gun... The decision not to issue an alert clearly got people killed.

Prediction: President of University - fired or resigns
VP of University - fired or resigns
Chief of Police - fired or resigns

I agree completely - Virginia Tech's police completely dropped the ball on this one. I *might* understand a little more if this had happened on a campus with a long history of peace and civility (i.e., the vast majority of college campuses), but that's not the case with Virginia Tech.

In August, an escaped convict killed a guard on Va Tech's campus. Last week they had two bomb threats called in. After these two events, I can't fathom how they did not lock down the campus when the first shooting call came in. Then it took them 2 hours to inform the student body? I mean, come on. I hope some heads role from that campus. I can't imagine what the parents are going through, especially after hearing the two shooting incidents were so far apart and how the campus had been the target of two separate bomb threats last week.

Here's an early warning to keep this apolitical.

That said, as a college student, this is a very hard hitting incident.

Daylon,
As a past DR Program Manager the first time they proposed something like this I would disqualify it in testing. Well, if true, your predictions seem very realistic and not at all unreasonable. But add to it the entire DR planning team, and consultants, it any.

Now I am going to just go back to my corner and start counting to 10 until all the facts are in. I am also calling my kids to find out what their campus' do.

Not to get political, but that's what we do now - We ask 1. Who is to blame?, 2. Why wasn't it prevented?, and 3. How can we make sure this NEVER EVER happens again?

Sorry Daniel.. didn't meet to make it seem political. I'm sure we'll know all the facts in the coming days, but these types responses from the people in charge during the press conference just make me crazy...

Good let's all be, "Apolitical Intellectuals"

Apolitical Intellectuals.

One day
the apolitical
intellectuals
of my country
will be interrogated
by the humblest
of our people.

They will be asked
what they did
when their country was slowly
dying out,
like a sweet campfire,
small and abandoned.

No one will ask them
about their dress,
or their long siestas
after lunch,
or about their futile struggles
against nothingness.
Or about their ontological
way to make money.
No, they won't be questioned
on Greek mythology,
or about the self-disgust they felt
when someone deep inside them
was getting ready to die
the coward's death.

They will be asked nothing
about their absurd
justifications
nurtured in the shadow
of a huge lie.

On that day,
the humble people will come,
those who never had a place
in the books and poems
of the apolitical intellectuals
but who daily delivered
their bread and milk,
their eggs and tortillas;
those who mended their clothes,
those who drove their cars,
those who took care of their dogs and gardens,
and worked for them,
and they will ask:
What did you do when the poor suffered,
when tenderness and life
were dangerously burning out in them?

Apolitical intellectuals of my sweet country,
you will have nothing to say.

A vulture of silence
will eat your guts.
Your own misery
will gnaw at your souls.
And you will be mute in your shame.

By Otto Rene Castillo

Yes, let us remain apolitical.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to every family member and person on the campus.

With a son away at college this is a bad day for everyone.

When something like that happens they SHOULD have informed and warned students but on the other hand, they *may* have tried to keep it contained as to not create chaos around the campus. of course in this case, they were wrong.

my prayers go out to those victims and their families.

*i got this news after coming home from class.. just one of those days...
