Need Tech Spec for a SATA hard - 04-19-2007, 09:44 AM

My 60GB hard drive has completely run out of space on my Mac Book laptop. Many online stores have so many options it gets very confusing to choose one. I would like to replace it with a much larger one, but before I do I have a few questions.
  1. Any brand that are GREAT or any brand I should not buy?
  2. Will my Mac Book support SATA 3.0GB?
    There is a TOSHIBA MK1637GSX 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM for $114.99
  3. Will my Mac Book support 7200 RPM drives?
    -Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021AS 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
Notebook compatibility: SATA interface only - $109.99

    -HITACHI Travelstar 7K100 HTS721010G9SA00 (0A25016) 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Notebook Hard Drive - $104.99
  4. I know some "SATA" drives are actually IDE with SATA adapters. Unknowingly if I purchase one of these will it be comapitable (fit & function) with the Mac Book?
  5. How will the largers sizes and faster RPM drives affect my battery life?
  6. Any heating issues with the faster, larger hard drives?

Thanks,
-Sonny

I'm in the same boat on my G4 PowerBook. I know that Apple uses the Hitachi/IBM Travelstar line. Check out the "Memory to Go" website. They are really good Mac folks and I've bought all my Mac Ram from them. They list the 2.5" 5400RPM 100GB drive for $152 and the 7200RPM for $230. I'm not sure if the 7200RPM will give you any problems in the MacBook, but I'm looking at one for my G4 PowerBook.

Give them a call. They seem to be knowledgeable.

faster drives will impact the battery life, but it shouldn't be significant. 7200 over 5400 may not be notiecable, instead look at the buffer size to make a real difference in effective "speed". 7200 with a smaller buffer may actually perform worse than a 5400 with a 16MB buffer.
