Photo Assisnment for NYIP - 04-20-2007, 10:52 AM

This question will also be beneficial to several other tpf'ers that are students there also.

I need to start gathering some ideas for my unit 3 shots. I would like to try something new for the assignment.
Here is the assignment:

Photograph #1:
Photograph an outdoor object- not a person- that you think looks good when lit by direct sun coming at a 45° angle.

Photograph #2:
Photograph an outdoor object- not a person- that you think is enhanced by light coming from the side (either left or right)- that is, 90° sidelighting. The best type of object for this type of sidelighting, as you know, is one in which you want to bring out surface texture or writing.

I think most students use churches and other similar buildings and cemeteries, but I would like to think of something different.
Does anyone have any ideas?

45° angle from in front or from behind or does it matter? Because if you can do a 45 from behind, the sun setting and peeking through tree limbs so that you see rays at a 45 degree angle across your photo might be different. But you'd really have to watch out for lens flare, although sometimes that looks pretty good too.

Something with writing... Maybe some kind or memorial or historical marker that has raised lettering that you can emphasize with the shadows of side lighting. Since I don't know what is available around the Allen/Dallas area, I can't be specific, but if I was doing this in Houston, I'd probably try one of the markers out at San Jacinto State Park with either the monument or the battleship OOF in the background.

Scott,

I'm working on this assignment right now, too. This has been the most difficult one for me to come up with subject matter for. All my shots have been done near sunset, with the sun near the horizon. So far I've shot:

1. With 45-degree frontlighting . . . a plaster-of-paris elephant, about 18" tall (it's a garden-type ornament with lots of wrinkles).

2. With 90-degree sidelighting . . . a close wide-angle shot of an arrangement of horseshoes leaning against a horseshoe pitching stake. The horseshoes have relief lettering and the stake has chipped paint.

2a. I've also tried this with a macro shot of a coin -- just a regular nickel -- so the raised lettering would show shadow, but I'm not happy with the result so I probably won't use this one.

3. With backlighting . . . a flower (not sure what kind) with translucent petals. Not really happy with this one either, but still thinking.

Please let me know if you come up with any inspired ideas.

Thanks,

Mike

I am on the exact same assignment, and am having a hard time getting the shots I like? If you are in the Dallas area would you like to get together to work on this?

Kevin - I just replied to the other NYIP thread. I live in Allen and am looking for something to shoot for this unit. I really want to do something different.
