I am looking for a North Texas band - preferably in the Wichita Falls, Amarillo, Abilene, Lubbock area that has a Red Dirt/Contemporary country sound.
Can anyone recommend one?
Thanks,
Russell

My recommendation, which is how I find musicians, is to...
1) Post flyers at guitar center that you're available.
2) Post on craigslist.org.
3) Post on myspace.com (classifieds).
4) Call some local studios and see if any bands are looking for musicians.

All great ideas but... you don't know where I live. No #1 or #4 and I'd prefer to have a personal recommendation than to advertise wholesale.
Thanks anyway.

They aren't ideas, I've used them all. It doesn't matter where you live, almost every town has some place that sell instruments. AND you did post cities, and I know all of them do. BTW, posting here.... just like wholesale... doing it online or off, it's the same no matter how you look at it.

Thanks,
Russell | Rex Thomas has a band that has a bit of an older sound (not exactly contemporary), but if you are looking for a band that knows how to have a good West Texas Dance, then they are great -- He's out of Acuff. I can find details if you are interested. Of course if you are interested the finders fee can be no less than a weekend trip with you showing me some of your wildlife photo tips

Thanks,

What is the general date of the gig? I know of one other more contemporary type Texas sound band, that does a lot of traveling in the area. I don't remember their bands name, only know one guy in it, but they mainly play a college type scene.

Who said anything about hiring a band?!
So you're in a small town looking for bands to play with in other towns. You can still post on those sites looking for leads. As for calling studios, call the studios in those towns.
BTW, there are some other details we need to know... like what you play, are you just waiting to gig or are you looking for paid work.
I'm going to be upfront with you, I run a record label here in Dallas and I'm very hard on musicians because most of them are lazy, unreliable, and unprofessional. I pay my musicians extremely well, especially for studio work, and it irks me to no end to see musicians give bands the run-around.

I think we can direct this conversation in the right direction pretty easy.
Take a look at Dobik's responses - exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Dobick.
All I am looking for is a recommendation for a band that I can hire for a function. I live on this tiny island called Childress that is surrounded by a sea of mesquite trees and thought to myself, "I'll bet the TPF community would be a good resource as a place to start." Thank you again Dobick.
Now, I am sure that the musicians you work with appreciate (some maybe not so much) you being hard on them and I respect your stance as you run your record label. It would irk me as well if a musician was giving a band a run around.
With all that said, let me be upfront with you: I have a feeling that I am irritating you. My advice to you is that you save your angst for someone more worthy than me like the unprofessional, lazy, and unreliable musicians like you mentioned.
Take care,
Russell

He lines up the crosshairs .. breaths slowly, pulls the trigger .. and down goes the target.
Randy Rogers and Charlie Robison both played here in Tyler somewhat recently. If they'll come this way, I'm sure they'd travel that way. Are you looking for a "known" band or more of a local one? Not sure what you're gigging, or your bankroll.
Here's a list of artists tagged red dirt off of last-fm. http://www.last.fm/tag/alt-texas-red+dirt+country
Wiki list as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dirt_(music)
Was a good band one of my friends had on her myspace page, but the login is down. Imagine that .. something wrong with myspace.
