bikes are like cars, you can save a lot of money if you buy LAST years model. when I bought my bike several years ago I saved over $400 by going with the older model.

$400 for disc brakes is pushing it and still getting a decent MTB.. If you go closer to $500 you can get either a Trek 4300 Disc (gotta find a Trek dealer around you) or a Iron Horse Maverick 5.0 at Performance Bikes in Ft Worth

Probably do-able, but will you be happy with it? A serious, strong, lightweight MB with disc's, decent componants and suspension is going to be much more.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Schwinn-Moab-Dis...QQcmdZViewItem

That's a Moab 2(edit- sorry I didn't realize it was a 15"!), I have the Moab 1 that I bought brand new from my friend who used to work for Schwinn. It's a $1000 bike- with his discount I got mine for $600 new. I'm not sure of the differences between the Moab 1 and Moab 2 disc bikes but I can tell you that mine is a tank! Extremely smooth to ride, shift, I've beat the crap out of it and it still works flawlessly and like new. Quality components, fairly light and the disc brakes are of course awesome. The only thing I've done is get a more comfy seat.

HTH's.

There are other things to think about besides just the disc brakes. Do you want a hard or soft tail? Is weight an issue? Do you only care about price and what kind of brakes are on it?

If cost is an issue keep in mind that besides added weight they add alot to the price when compared to rim brakes.

My suggestion is that if those are your only criteria then your best bet is to find something on Ebay or Craigslist. If you're unsure then head down to your local bike shop to take a look at what's avail. You'll get a better idea of what you want.

In the price point and based on the fact you want disc brakes...you will find that Specialized, Trek, Giant, and some others will be found for sale used.

The only suggestion I make is that if you plan to ride avidly (i.e. 3x or more a month) get closer to the 1k price point. You want to get something that will last and at $400 it will be very difficult to find quality. If you only plan on riding a few times a year...you'll be fine in that range.

I'm not an expert by any means but I have been riding for over 20 years from BMX to road. I can help with most questions you have...just let me know.

How you doin'?
Daniel

One more thing. Bikes are like clothing. You want one that fits you.
Bikes come in sizes, like clothing. You don't want to put an size XS on a XXXL body, or vise versa!
Don't buy one from Ebay without knowing what size it is, and what size you want.

Keep your eye on Craigslist - 05-01-2007, 07:06 PM

I bought a very nice road bike from a guy in Dallas for a little bit of nothing. I built my mountain bike, but $400 is gonna be hard to swing for a new bike. Good luck.

I'll probably be getting a hardtail Trek from a local shop for around $450 - no disc brakes (those are on the $500 model) and no frills but it'll be a good quality serviceable runabout bike, which is what I need. I don't tackle trails or ride in races.

*sob* I miss my bike :/

I used to race a lot back home with friends and such. Not had time since I've moved here. Nearly 6 years off my bike now. Might have to force some time, and start again.

Good luck on your bike search!!!! - 05-01-2007, 11:35 PM

Henry, If I run across a good deal on a bike, I will send you an e-mail.

Please heed my WARNING, excessive mountain biking may lead to visual symptoms suffered by my friend Jim as seen below. This was taken after he finished ~65 miles in the Ouachita Mountains.

I'll second DORBA... GREAT organization, and good people. Plenty of deals to be had in the forum, as well.
I've been riding for over 25 years now, and DORBA is the best cycling organization I've had the pleasure to deal with / be a supporter of.

I think the suggestion of finding something that's 'last year's model' is a good one. If you buy something brand new for about $400, you'll be getting bottom of the barrel compnents. Especially in the shifting system. At least you might get a steup up with last year's model.
Or, try used. I've bought two bikes off Craigslist in the past year and loved both. Got great deals, too. I've currently got 6 bikes and I never can seem to give each one enough attention...

Like Daniel mentioned, there's a lot to factor in, but the main thing is to get something you'll enjoy riding. 'Cause if you don't enjoy it... You won't ride it.
