Any Jazz Listeners??? - 05-03-2007, 12:04 PM

Hey, I'm finding that I really like some good upbeat jazz music, but there aren't any radio stations here in Utah (ironic, being the home of the Utah Jazz!), so I haven't been exposed to much. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Thanks!!!

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

Utah 'Jazz'....there oughta be a law.....(they WERE the New Orleans Jazz originally.....)

anyway, you'll have to define jazz. For me Jazz died after Big Band and Swing.

I listen to the new stuff - quasi-jazz I guess, but it's good filler music. There are a couple of streaming radio stations around I think.

KHJZ in Houston webcasts. They're "smooth" jazz and pretty darn good. They've been good for the Houston jazz scene - bringing some good jazz performances to the Houston area.

There is a local artist here in the DFW area, Arlington Jones. His style of jazz is AMAZING!!! http://www.arlingtonjones.com
Lucky peterson is another.
Tom Braxton is another. http://www.tombraxton.com/index_files/frame.htm
Jazz is like rock though, there are SOOO MANY variations.

I also like jazz, primarily light jazz - Dave Koz, Earl Klugh, David Benoit, Dave Sanborn, Candy Dulfer, Boney James, Mark Antoine, Steve Cole, Kirk Whalum, etc. I'm not into what might be called real jazz as much. Just recently our long-time light jazz station here in DFW (the Oasis) changed formats, so I guess we're stuck too. I listen occasionally to internet radio through iTunes, but not frequently.

I used to listen to 95.7 The Wave (Houston) online, but they seem to have dropped their streaming player.

Some of what they play isn't jazz either. It depends on when you listen.

...and there ain't anything wrong with that. Some of the best music out there today is the jazz influenced "house", the "nu-jazz", and such.

Since I have a preference for guitar based jazz, I'd say Peter White, Marc Antoine, Earl Klugh, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, George Benson (yes, the master!), and I'd even go for some Four Play, Otmar Liebert, and Rippingtons in there too.

It really depends on what you like.

try pandora.com to sample any of the artists listed here. i'm a big be-bop/big band jazz fan and they have a ton to offer.
