I am thinking this might end up being one of those threads that gets "moderated". LOL

I've decide that I'm going to rotate my holidays. Certain holidays will be ignored one year, and the others the next. The corporate shoving in the face is getting annoying.

I love celebrating all holidays. I like learning about other cultures. My favorite so far is Canada Day (July 1st)... oh great hockey nation. I love hockey. There's also Dia de Muerte but I never really understood the "holiday."

2005 census, the most common last name was Gonzales...go figure haha.

For much the same reason we celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

I believe the word "holiday' originally represented special religious days. Based on the words 'holy' and 'day'. Dia de Muerte (Day of the Dead), celebrated almost all over the world as a time to honor and remember loved ones that has passed away.

I personally don't have a problem with people celebrating a day special to them. With the US being founded by, occuppied by and open to different cultures, I can respect them all: Cinco De Mayo,Dia De Muerte, St. Patrick's Day, Mardi Gras, etc....

Many(not all) people that celebrate Cinco De Mayo specifically as a 'drinking occassion' or Mexico's Independence Day(it's not) don't know that it was originally intended to celebrate a specifc win against French oppression...the 'Battle of Puebla, Mexico'.

Many(not all) people that celebrate St. Patrick's Day specifically as a 'drinking occassion' don't know that it was originally a feast day, intended to celebrate Saint Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland.

Mardi Gras' origin has been linked to a pagan celebration in early Rome, not New Orleans or Brazil...

What bothers me more is the strong corporate push to sell product, especially alcohol, rather than educating people of what the celebration is. But is it entirely their fault, if parents don't teach and younger generations don't bother to take the time to learn?

Thanks for posting this thread. I think it's interesting to see different opinions on the subject even if not everyone agrees.

It is purely and simply a reason to sell beer. What it (and others) started as has been lost on the braindead drinking masses.

I believe we celebrate it for the same reason we celebrate alot of non US holidays. Now this is just my opinion and I agree im sure this thread will get moderated but my 2 cents.

We are suppose to be one nation, having alot of hispanic and irish blood in me I can related to non US holidays as well. I think it is out not just out of respect or to show that we are a friendly country but to show we appreciate all cultures. I like all holidays personally, I like knowing about other cultures, I have always been a major history nut. :)

One other (funny) reason people celebrate cinco de mayo is because there is always lots of food and drinks LMAO, and hey man when you work at a place like I do, you appreciate free holiday meals at work, because fast food gets annoying on lunch breaks :-P

We're just helping celebrate the defeat of the French...or maybe we just love any reason to drink.
