Humorous Photo Stories - do you have one? - 05-06-2007, 11:39 AM

I have a good friend who is a bird watcher. He liked the pictures I was taking and I talked him into buying his first digital camera. He bought a Kodak z612, a 6 megapixel 12x optical zoom. He was happy with his camera and is always looking for a picture to outdo me. He called me last week around 6:30 in the evening asking me where I was, he had just taken an owl picture. I asked where he was and he told me the road he was on and I started to laugh, what's so funny he asked? I asked if the owl was on a tall billboard by barnhills restaurant and he said yes, but he only got 2 pictures as he jumped out of the truck at the red light and took 2 pictures. I said well, lets go back with a tripod cause the owl is fake and sits on the billboard everyday. He was really embarrased.

Not a photo story but a decoy story...

Back when I was in the army in NC, there was a command sergeant major who was relieved of his duties and placed in an admin role for not only illegally carrying a .45, but using it to empty into a deer decoy on the side of the road. Rumor was that after he emptied his pistol from fairly close range into this realistic auto moving decoy, that he proceeded to dismember the thing as well, when he realized that he had been fooled. He was still kicking the thing when the MP's pulled up to arrest him!

I have to post an image to supplement the story...

I had noticed a trail in the grass between my hayfield and an old barn that is on my place earlier in the week so when I spotted a momma skunk and her babies cutting through the corner of my back yard early one morning I hurriedly grabbed my camera, "bolted on" the 70-200 and dashed out the back door to where the trail exited the tall grass. I was about 10' or so away when they came out... I was kneeling down in the wet grass... wearing nothing but boxers (I live in the country so no people's eyes were harmed :smile ) when mamma and the two kids came out right where I wanted them to. I took an image... the sound of the shutter caught moms attention and that's where this image came from.

The first thought I had was "oh cool... this will make a good shot". The second was "oh sh_t!" I just knew I was going to get sprayed... but she spared me and they wandered off to their "apartment" located under my barn

Michael, You are lucky....I have never been hit by a skunk but the one in your picture does not look happy and it's good you were not sprayed. But if it happens again, remember to protect your camera if possible, you could never get the smell off.

The Owl one reminds me of one I had a few years ago.
I was driving with my wife and inlaws from Colorado to Yellowstone.
Out in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, at least 50-60 miles from any town and in the middle of a big grazing range with hills in the far distance, we spot a "lump" on a woodedn power/tel pole that is part of a line stretching along the highway, but about 500 or so yards away.
The inlaws and wife are birders, so we immediatly stop and they start checking out the 'owl' with the binocs.

At that time I had a Olympus C4000 with a CrystalVue spotting scope that would attach to the front. I set it up and zoomed in and took a shot. Yep, it's an owl.
I said I thought it looked fake, but they were convinced they saw the head swivel.

Well I took out the card and plugged it into my laptop and zoomed in - sure enough - fake.

But it was a good 20 minute laugh break from the road trip.

I have a great story on a similar vein. A friend of mine was housesitting for a friend of hers. She invited me and another friend over for dinner. I had gone outside to get something from the car while my two friends were touring the house. When I returned both my friends were in the master bedroom standing on the home owners bed (each holding their dog) and screaming at the top of their lungs because they saw a rat. They pointed the rat out to me and I said it looked fake. One friend swore she had seen it move. It was too funny when the cat came in the room and started batting the rat around...it was the cat's toy!! :c)

Closest I have is being reported to the police as being "a male with a camera standing outside his pants." I can assure you I was inside my pants. 'Twas a bit chilly that day and there was no need to ruin my reputation.
