I don't think I can fire a shotgun in the city limits.

owls - 05-08-2007, 08:35 PM

Those decoy owls that have been discussed in a different thread are used for that purpose. I don't know how well they work, but they are used in places that the bird droppings would be undesirable.

Cats tied on a long leash in the trees.

As a last resort you can cut the tree's down.

Or put a net over the trees.

well if you like to shoot, my kids have used their air soft guns on the squirrels pretty effectiively. The squirrels do come back at some point...air soft guns and ammo are cheap..$20 for gun and $10 for 10,000 air soft pellets..Keep you busy for a while..

What works best for me is to go outside with at least a 300mm lens. Anytime I want some pictures of birds there's never one in sight.

Mace/Pepperspray

(gosh we are amean bunch).

Personally I welcome birds in my trees. We have a very bird friendly yard providing bruch, trees, waterbaths, and feed for the birds.
Birds eat mosquitos and tree roaches. Very good.
And their music is welcome.
Even the cooing of doves.
Our regulars are 3 types of doves, sparrows, a few blue jays, cardinals and mockers, and the grackels (the rats of the bird world which I could do without).
Irregulars are a few wood peckers and the seasonal migrants, and an occassional hawk.

What kind and size of trees? What kind of birds?

Ordinarily, a few good blasts with a water hose right about dark will move most of them but it'll have to be done on a somewhat regular basis for a few days... If it's daytime birds then I have no real answer other than the standard home remedies like hanging aluminum pie pans in the tree, glittery streamers, and so forth... It's also said that a few rubber snakes placed strategically in the branches are quite effective too.

It's a live oak and they keep ****ting all over the sidewalk, front walkway, etc. I'm not home most of the day to keep them out of the tree.

Don't forget, it's a federal crime to hurt or harass migratory birds without a permit. Even Grackles are covered by that. (Which is why San Antonio has a problem when the huge flocks of Gs hang around their hotels pooping on all the guests and their cars).
