Witchita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, OK - 05-16-2007, 10:41 PM

I'm tired of being cooped up and must commune with nature for a weekend. Thinking about driving up to Oklahoma on Friday. Have any of you been to the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge? Is it worth the trip? Any must make photo opportunities?

TIA,
Rusty

Jason, great brochure - I'm going. My boys will get a big kick out climbing a few hills and seeing the wildlife. Did you camp in the back country when you were there? Just wondering is Charon's Garden is worth foregoing dutch oven enchiladas on Saturday night.

Everything you want to know about it and getting there.

Just outside of Lawton, OK. Only 3hrs away. Might make for a good DFW/North Texas weekend GTG if there are enough TPFers who like to camp and hike. Group sites can be reserved.

Charon Gardens worth it....I'd say no. Unless your boys are really into the solitary backpacking thing too, but I'd take the dutch over over Charon.

I've camped in Charon, and it's fun and all, but there are so many places to go and hike in the park you'll want the freedom to drive from one place to another easily.

Mike...my fellow Benbrook-ian... The Wichita Mountains are just north of Lawton, OK, which is about an hour north of Wichita Falls on I-44. You'd be looking at a 3 1/2 hour drive or thereabouts.

Check them out

Wichita Mountains is about 4 to 6 miles from Cache Oklahoma. There is a small restaurant and gas station in Cache. The sign in the parking lot talks about a amusement park which is no longer working. You can get some great meals in the restaraunt and not pay over $4 per person.

The refuge is a great place to explore. If your lucky, you will find the parallel forest and also heart rock.

The buffalo roam free and can be found crossing the roads. You can get fairly close to the buffalo but be careful of the bulls as they are very protective. Holy city is a great place to see as well as going to the top of Mount Scott. So much to see there, it would take me a while to list it all.

If you go at the right time of the year which is during the summer, then you will see the Mountain Boomers otherwise known as Collared Lizards, sunning themselves on the rocks.

You can see the artillery shells hitting the ground from Elk Mountain...but they don't fire every day. Fort Sill is a huge artillery base between Lawton and the Wichita Mountains.

And forget about Cache....if you're going to the Wichitas, you have to eat at Meer's.

Longhorn meat hamburgers that are amazing.

I ask because I used to rock climb up there and one day we had just got up on top of Elk Mt. and they started firing and it was interesting the see the flash of the shell, dust cloud and then hear the sound of impact.

I love it up there. What a great place to visit. The flowers are really out now because of the rains.

Charon's Gardens is my favorite.

http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=47006

That's Elk Mountain on the left end of the range. Post Oak Lake in the foreground.

There is a really good trail to the top of Elk that starts at the Sunset area.

My avatar was taken by Dane Tessler when I walked out to find a spot to take this pano.
