This issue comes up from time to time in my office. From past behaviour, it's been centered around the automatic update service. Sometimes the issue has been as easy to fix as simply stopping the automatic update service, and renaming C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to something else SDTemp is usually what I go with, and rebooting. Othertimes, a re-registration of some automatic update files (I'll find the KB in the morning). And in some cases, as appears to be the situation recently with a handful of MS patches, redownload, and redeploy after they get them updated.

I've seen a number of reports recently on the last two rounds of patches having caused speed and performance issues with computers.

Thanks everyone for your input. Hadn't checked my thread in a day b/c for 24 hours I was able to get online, then yesterday kapooey! Gone again. I'll try all your fixes - I HATE being stupid about this stuff.

The original error message was, "Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then I checked details and the svchost.exe was one of five problems.

Now I don't get an error message at all and when I poked around it looks like I don't have an IP address anymore. What the . . .?

Ok - don't yell at me. Here's a REALLY stoopid question. How do I download the patches if I can't get on the internet? Don't the patches just go directly to the appropriate files?

Or can I download them to my laptop desktop and save 'em to a CD and then upload on my other computer?

Never mind - I'm such a goober. I can "save" rather than "run." Duh.

Give that a try, simple little utility that has been a part of my tech arsenal for a while.
I am cautiously optimistic and am sending this from my desktop computer. This seems to have done the trick - I've been online for over five minutes!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

On the other hand, my external hard drive with all my backup files crashed today (yes, I have copies on DVD). What techno god did I piss off?

Nice that that the winsock fixed ya up, while you got internet access you might want to go ahead make sure virus / spyware programs have the latest definitions, specially spyware scanners, and maybe go ahead and re-scan with the update for good measure.

EDIT: Oh yeah you should make sure virus applications and spyware/malware apps are always up to date.

Steve Jobs FTW

as far as AntiVirus goes. I use Avast just make sure to disable the guy who talks to you out of no where to tell you that he has updated your software.

If the tcp stack fix doesn't keep you fixed, you might try looking at this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Microsoft released it today regarding the issue you're describing.
