Type 2 Diabetes - 05-22-2007, 01:04 AM

Went to the Dr for a physical a few weeks ago to get all my levels checks and all the funs stuff associated with a physical.

a few days later Doc tells me to come back ASAP to check my Glucose levels as they were in the diabetic range for fasting. Also my cholesterol was through the roof. No wonder I have been feeling like crud lately.

I go back to the Doc, glucose is still to high. Said I was Type 2 Diabetic. Doc suggested I sign up for a clinical study (lab rat stuff) which I am more than willing to do since my parents are diabetics also and anything I can do to support diabetes research i am all for..I went in for a pre screen the other day and go back next week to see if I qualify for the study, which would mean free diabetic testing supplies and medicine for 6 months, plus $200 if I complete it.

Also Doc wanted me to lose 20 lbs or more (im going for 40 lbs) so I have completely changed my food intake and have been riding the bike every day since last week. I really really want to control this with proper diet and exercise. as I don't like taking meds for long terms and I hate needles.

it does not stop there, it gets better, during all of this I have had to take my father back to the hospital which he is still there due to an infection in his foot and kidney trouble related to his diabetes. he is not doing good now, and we hope he pulls out of this.

and my mother developed an ulcer in her left eye and having to deal with that as well.

plus the rumor mill at work has started generating stories of layoffs which we know are coming at work, we just dont know when, this year or early next year. Several of the larger rats got off the ship already and usually when the big rats leave "to pursue other career options" its a sing of layoff soon to follow. Im ready for a career change any way, anybody got the number to that truck driving school we've seen on TV, truck masters I think.

I quit smoking 2 months ago and I haven't had a beer or booz in about the same amount of time.

Doc gave me some Zanex (sp) and that has helped with all the stress.

I just feel like i picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue (that is a joke not a true statement) gotta maintain some humor in all this madness

any way just had to vent a little

James

James,

I'm just glad to see you still have your sense of humor. That'll get you through all this.

And the lifestyle change will help more than you know. Two of my coworkers just found out they have Type II diabetes and they also have changed their diets and gotten into exercise programs. They have both lost quite a bit of weight and amazingly in just a few weeks they are both a lot more upbeat and productive at work than they were before they found out.

I hope your father and mother get better soon.

Take care,

Regards,
Patti

Problems never seem to come one at a time, but it looks like your head is on straight. Look on the bright side, when you get the $200, as a self proclaimed"cheap bastard", you can buy a new lens!

thanks guys, i have done the weight loss and better eating habbits a few years ago and lost 40 lbs in 8 months and kept it off for about a year , then I met my wife and it went down hill from there.

But now I really dont have a choice to NOT do whats right. I do not want to end up as bad as my father so I have to do whats right for me.

I have found a nice 20 mile round trip path I like so this should go well. also I have a wind trainer I can put my bike on so I can ride stationary in the garage when its raining or too cold.

James,
I am in the same boat found out I was Type II about 4years ago after I when in for a physical. My problem is I don't have much of a support group. My wife really hasn't changed the cooking and due to stress at work and home my eating habits are not very well. The doc finally had to put me on meds, but it took 3 years. Maybe this story will help motivate me to lose some weight (I only need about 10 pounds). I hope your Mother and Father get better soon. I always seem to worry about those complications that could later in life, but can't seem to get myself to realize it.

Sorry about all the stressful things going on in your life right now, but I know from personal experience (spouse, not me) that diet and exercise really, really, really do make a difference in dealing with Type II diabetes and high cholesterol. You are right - it is a total lifestyle change to adjust at first -- but one that will make a huge difference long term. It doesn't mean you have to totally give up foods you love (unless you just LOVE junk food 24/7). I can give you some specifics on what worked for my husband if you want. Send me a PM. Good luck.

:) Sounds like when the doctor told me I had diabetes. I went in for what I thought to be a kidney infection, or kidney stones and walked out having high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, a hurt back, and depression. Geesse. Scared to go back for something serious lol. I understand what you are going thru.

I heard a radio report this afternoon saying there was probably 10mil people who have diabetes and don't know it yet.

In January 2006 the doc told me I joined the club. Fortunately it's Type II and is controllable with 5mg of glucotrol every other day, diet and exercise. My life style changes were not radical or extreme. I'm keeping my numbers in the normal range. My routine is working well for me. The doc and the counselor are pleased. I've lost 25 pounds - even getting better looking (well at least the dogs think so).

Stress doesn't help any but I think I've gotten better at controlling it. Wishing you and your folks well. Feel free to PM anytime. I can at least tell you what's working well for me.

This happened to me as well. In Feb. I found out about my diabetes. And I'm also deaf in my left ear, blind in my right eye and learned last week I have cataracts forming due to the diabetes. Plus I've got some pinched nerves that make my arms go numb if I hold a phone to my ear for more than 5 minutes. And the diabetes medication make my legs swell and causes a rash if I'm in the sun for more than a few minutes. I've also got damage to my inner ear so I randomly fall over when I walk. I usually just pass it off as me being clumsy.
