Hogzilla! - 05-26-2007, 10:51 AM

Wow, what a porker, and it took 8 .50 caliber rounds from an S$W .500 pistol to put it down. The 11 year old boy is reported to be "proud" of his trophy. Final weight was 1,051 lbs.

The hog's head is being mounted by Jerry Cunningham of Jerry's Taxidermy. Cunningham said the animal measured 54 inches around the head, 74 inches around the shoulders and 11 inches from the eyes to the end of its snout.

Hmmm.... looks suspiciously similar to a hog that someone else in Alabama killed... and someone debunked... I can't remember what show it was on but they dug the carcass up and determined that "hogzilla" was a lot smaller than was claimed...

the original hogzilla is NOT a myth, it just grew after death (like most fish and wildlife). It was actually over 800 lbs instead of 1000+ as legendized.

And why wouldn't the boy be proud?

Since the second kill was actually weighed, processed and the head mounted and not just buried in the woods it probably is true-too many people to get a lie straight.

Wonder how much the kid left in his pants after this encounter?

Anything that is 8-10 feet long and pissed off is scary.

And still, 800-1000 pounds... there are a lot of vehicles that don't weigh that. Even if the "hogzilla" was "debunked"

it's still a monster

I dunno Look closely at some of the photos. They're set up so that the people are always far in the background. Typical camera trickery to over-emphasize the subject.

I don't know what is more scary: a giant hog or an 11-year old with a .50-cal revolver. When I was 11, I was still shooting a bb-gun and just starting to think about shooting a .22

I shot a .44 mag for the first time when I was 16... it was a memorable experience... Home skillet might have posed his 11 year old self with a .50 cal revolver but I seriously doubt that he has ever shot it.

Nothing against hunting but it is sad that an animal with this kind of gene pool has been eliminated from breeding offspring that would promulgate the continuation of possibly even larger subject.

Wow, that thing is huge. I can't imagine shooting that thing, I would be way too scared that it would come attack me after I shot it.

An 11 year old shooting a S&W 500 isn't hard believe since my 10 year old son has fired mine a few times. What I find hard to believe is the boy couldn't drop the hog with that pistol. The again I have soot hogs in the head with my Rugar 44mag RedHawk and it took two shots to drop them, a hogs skull is very thick and the round can sometimes not penetrait if they hit at a slight angle. Still even with ahog that large it should have went down with less shots than that. If any of you have ever eatten wild hog you know how gamie they taste and the older they get they worse they taste. If the story is true the boy has something to be proud of that he can tell his grandkids about. I don't really hunt anymore, just can't find the time, but I need to take my son this season. For a kid to go hunting and kill his first deer or hog is kind of like his passage into manhood just like it was centuries ago, or at least it is in a small town where everyone has grown up hunting. I hope none of my talking about hunting has offended those who do not believe in killing animals, I respect your beliefs and hope you can do the same for mine.

My old sheriff had a fella who used to BBQ the wild hogs he shot, and the meat was exceptionally good. A taste like no other meat I have had, he would bring it to the Sheriff's Office and we would make tacos of it. This was back in 94-95 in the early days.

Dang that's a big 'un... I'm not sure I would be wanting to hunt something like that with a .50 handgun. Something like a Barrett 82A1 would be more like it...

I always used a Rugar .44mag or sometime a Marlin 45-70 rifle. Most of the time we used dogs and they would run the hogs right at us so we could get a close shot, other times we had to listen for the dogs and run to them. It's been a while but they did have a bounty on hogs in VanZant county. If they get any worse around here there will be a bounty on them here also. You can't hardly drive down the road without seeing where wild hogs have tore up gardens or hay medows. They were getting out in the hwys in VanZant and a few were hit on I-20. Luckly they were hit by semis and not smaller cars, a hog will destroy a Honda Civic !

I haven't had any wild pork Tacos in a long time!!! We also used to mix the wild pork with deer meat and make sausage which was mighty tasty! the pork also made some pretty good jerky.
