Interesting quote from the June 2007 issue of Photoshop User magazine (page 76):

"What most people don't realize is that Ansel Adams, who was famous for his beautiful black-and-white photographs, wasn't a great photographer...but he was a good photographer and a master of the darkroom." -David Singer

In other words, Ansel did a lot of stuff in post. Interesting opinion.

Right, which is something I already knew. However, he had to have a good exposure with which to begin moving towards his vision.

He was extremely arrogant. I think Ansel Adams would have argued that he was both.
He certainly told enough people that he had that opinion.

It's not opinion. He had a highly modified enlarger with multiple bulbs in it and had control over the brightness of each bulb. He as also a master of dodge and burn. Look at many of his works and you'll see dark corners. That's not vignetting but here he burned in the corners to direct the eye back to the center of the frame.

Get a copy of Ansel Adams at 100 and look at how he changed his printing style and went back and reprinted images.

I have a dvd of Ansel Adams showing how he went about photographing the scenes and some of how he processed. In the video, he puts a print into the microwave to dry it explaining that it allows the whites to be whiter than if he had let the print air dry.
