It's not opinion. He had a highly modified enlarger with multiple bulbs in it and had control over the brightness of each bulb. He as also a master of dodge and burn. Look at many of his works and you'll see dark corners. That's not vignetting but here he burned in the corners to direct the eye back to the center of the frame.
Get a copy of
Ansel Adams at 100 and look at how he changed his printing style and went back and reprinted images.
