Good Begineer book? - 06-01-2007, 05:25 PM

Well first of all, let me say this. Im not really a book type of person. I can read magazines and other things that intrest me because every 1-2 pages its something new. But never really could sit down for days, weeks, etc and read a book...

But this whole photography bug has bitten and Im becoming more and more interested. But Im still for the most part stuck on "auto" and would like to really learn more about F#, ISO, etc. Right now they might as well be Chinese.

So I was thinking of stopping by Barns & Nobles tomorrow and picking out a book. Any ideas? Would like something that would simplify the technical stuff, but also maybe teach me things like the 1/3 rule, etc tips/hints for photography...

maybe one of those "??? for dummies" books?

How about a free book with lots of pictures that you can read right now? It covers all the basics you mentioned plus a bunch of other stuff. And from the feedback we've gotten, its easy to understand. *Mike* teaches old folks a basic photography class at the rec center. He made this for them. The hardest thing for them is getting the thing is using the computer.

I can PM you the link.

I think one of best reference books, which explains things in non-technical jargon is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. He has two other very good books on understanding your digital camera and understanding composition, but the exposure book is one I recommend to anyone getting interested. I've given it as a gift to several people as well. Rick Sammon has also written a number of excellent books - check his website for the whole list.

Sending you a PM. The Exposure book Lisa mentioned is good. Amherst media has a series of books that are easy to read that are also good. Check out Amazon. Just make sure you get an into book if the reg stuff is over your head. Maybe look at the library also.
