Stolen Leica Lens Sold on eBay Buyer Loses Lens - 06-04-2007, 01:02 PM

A bit of a warning about lenses and eBay. A regular Leica User Forum member recently got a used lens from a large eBay seller (in Europe). Sent to lens to Leica for coding and got a call from the police. Leica has a registery of stolen gear and checks it when equipment comes in. He's out now 1400 dollars. Here are the details.

---------------------------
"The market wants a Leica to be a Leica: the inheritor of tradition, the subject of lore, and indisputably a mark of status to own."
Mike Johnston

Man, that bites, I tend to agree about Leica not listing the nunbers as stolen, and they could have at least worked something out with the guy...maybe a discount on another lens or something.....

It sucks for the buyer, but rocks for the guy that got robbed. I haven't read the story yet, but buying from a large ebay seller is usually a good bet. Just remember, if it's too good to be true, something is wrong with it every time.

I suppose you could ask for the serial number and then runn it past the manufacturer.

He may well get his money back, but he ought to contact Leica UK about the lens hood he bought from them which they then sent to the original owner along with the lens.

I never buy from outside US, Been screwed by a guy in Canada also. Oh and must have a paypay confirmed does not always help either. Ebay is is full of scams these days. saw no less than 5 L glass 300 and 400mm 2.8 for sale, all said contact me at this email stuff. bid a $1 on each one. Ebay shut them down.
