interesting article, but when it comes to digital, prints are now a 2nd generation image. 1st generation (the file: RAW/JPG/whatever) is THE SOURCE document and is the one that needs archiving. Since the file cannot degrade (talking FILE, not media here), true lossless archiving is a real possibility.
To a large degree any print from film is likewise a 2nd genration image, only glass plates and such where the negatives were re-used and the print became the only surviving generation does it make sense. Same for lost negatives where the print is all that we have.
But in today's reality, if you preserve the digital file, you can make a print tomorrow or 400 years from now indistinguishable from today's, and as printer technology evolves, probably better.
Of course that assumes you SAVED the digital file....most casual users do not.
