Wow! Safari on Windows ... - 06-12-2007, 08:01 AM

... the only way I could care less about this is if I just didn't know.

Wow. A browser. On windows. Yawn.

Tabs? AutoFill? Built RSS? Pop-Up Blocking? Gee, it sounds great! It sounds amazing! It ... sounds like Opera.

Well. Now isn't that special? Everyone knows this is just a cross marketing/development ploy to plug ye old iPhone. But why would I care about that either? I don't have Cingular.

Hmm. I used to be Mac-curious. Now I think I am just getting iPhobic.

Prophet out.

I've loaded Safari on my Windows laptop and find that it has many bugs in it that needs to be worked out.

I think that the driving force here is that the soon to be released iPhone will run Safari. Consequently Windows users who buy the iPhone will have a common browser alternative. Plus, it is yet another way to get Windows users thinking about Apple.

Why?
I know that tons of "creative" types still insist on Apple, but is there any real advantage anymore? Is there any inherent advantage to Apple that I'm missing? I know that Keynote is better than PowerPoint but not enough to justify my switching because of that alone. I'm starting to think about a new desktop and am wondering if there's some reason I should begin the migration to Apple.

Don't like? Don't need it? Don't use it.

Pretty simple.

Now if you have a Mac and must use Windows, you have another option in cross platform browsers. Ever since MS killed IE for the Mac, you were limited to FF and Opera. I like FF, but it seems to be getting slower and fatter just like IE. Never tried Opera. Safari seems to be a good choice and I'll give it an honest try.

Frank, it's a BETA. Expect bugs. I won't use it for banking or any other business transactions, but for browsing TFP and other 'fun', it's working fine for me on Windows XP, PowerBook (G4), and my Mac Pro (Intel).

I know it's a BETA. That's why I said it needs many bugs worked out.

The reason for releasing Safari on Windows is for the iPhone. Since third party folks won't be able to develop apps specifically compiled for the iPhone, they will have to do it through AJAX and Web 2.0 standards. Safari is not groundbreaking, but what it will do with the iPhone in the not too distant future should turn some heads.

Even though I am a Mac user I can not honestly give you a must-have reason for getting a Mac. I just like the look and feel of the Mac interface (and that is after using Windows extensively for many years). If you are thinking about a Mac I would suggest going to one of the Apple stores and just playing with one for awhile.

I'll give all of you Windows photographers a good reason to get Safari...

It's the only color space aware browser available for your platform.

Well isn't that just like Apple to go implement something Windows users have needed for years... (whether they know it or not). Now that it's been done, Microsoft can finally copy it and do it right (grin).

I dl'd it and it's very fast! Of course some of the hicups are serious and when they fix them I'm sure it'll slow it down but for now, general browsing is very nice!
