Dead iPod - 06-14-2007, 07:19 PM

So I grabbed my iPod this morning and took it to the car for my usual drive to campus only to find it wouldn't play. As far as I know, I haven't done anything to harm it (lately). It navigates the menus just fine but won't play, it just sits on 0:00 no matter how many times you press play or reset it. I've reloaded the software as well. It's a 5G 30 gig video. Anyone have any suggestions short of replacing the drive or main board?

I'll sell you mine in 9 weeks, if you still want one...

That's odd. I did get some weird behaviour from my 8 gig Nano but it's gone now.

Ha, too late, I already bought a new one since MacResource couldn't offer any suggestions but I'd love to take it back to Circuit City if anyone else has any breaking ideas!

BTW: It's 2 years old so it's out of warranty.

Have you done a full reset back to factory defaults on the thing yet?

You might try it.

Also Might try synching to a computer with no songs on it (or maybe one song) so that it clears the hd completely, and then reloading from your main computer, and see what that does for you. It will take some time, but better than a complete loss.

I got my iPod back from apple about 2 weeks ago, and it has been doing the same thing since i got the replacment in. I am wondering if it is the new updated software for it.

I am going to take it back this weekend, and see what they tell me. I am also not able to add music directly to it from my library. I have to add it to iTunes first, then create a playlist and then synch it to the iPod.

So there are several things i am having issues with that i was not having with the one that went out.

Yes, I've done a full factory default on it. I bought a new drive for it online and I'm gonna try that. Our local Apple reseller (which has certified techs) told me it probably wasn't worth fixing but it's worth an $80 drive (which is returnable) to see if that does the trick. I don't think it's the software, I've been running that same versions for months I think. I don't remember upgrading anytime recently nor have I have had the problem since I got the iPod about 2 years ago.

Sorry.. no suggestions... my wife's 4 gig nano went for a spin in the washing machine this week.... we're still letting it dry out before trying it to see if it still works. :(

Try going through ITunes to reset the software on it.. you'll lose your files but it might make it work..

Or try plugging into a USB on another computer and try to navigate to the files and save them locally?

Daniel, who are you telling to get a MacBook Pro? I've already done all the reset procedures...pretty sure the drive is dead but we'll see in a few days when the new one gets here.

Well, you get a free iPod with a Macbook, right?

Good luck with the drive.

Yeah if you buy any Mac right now (w/ educational discount), you get a free 4GB ipod Nano or, up to $199 off the 8GB Nano or the 30GB or 80GB iPod via mail-in rebate.

The WEIRD thing is that it seems like Apple has just had a price drop on some of the iPods -- the 4GB nano is listing as $149, but the rebate form is still saying $199.

Yeah, except I already have 2.3 Macbook Pro, ha! I don't think 2.4 is worth upgrading for to get the free iPod.

mine was losing contact with the headphone plug, sent it in, got it back, worked for about 2 days then started doing the same thing, sent it in again and now it's fixed. I should note that it was free the first time, then I had to pay shipping the second time. Also a 5g 30 gig. I gotta say, their cs was excellent. Best I've ever dealt with... well, actually I didn't have to deal with anyone, but it was a very pleasent experience none the less...
